Exciting Opportunity: Join the Climate Mobility Reporting Online Training in East, Horn and Southern Africa

Background

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) defines migration as the movement of people from their usual place of residence, either internally or across borders, and promotes humane and orderly migration for the benefit of both migrants and society. In the East, Horn, and Southern Africa (EHSA) region, climate change and environmental degradation are key drivers of human mobility, with both sudden and slow-onset events displacing communities and threatening livelihoods. Despite the growing significance of climate-induced migration, media coverage remains limited.

To address this gap, IOM is organizing a training for young journalists, influencers, and digital storytellers to build their knowledge and capacity to report on the climate–migration nexus. The training offers foundational insights, practical tools, and exposure to key policy frameworks like the Kampala Ministerial Declaration (KDMECC). It aims to foster a network of skilled communicators who can elevate awareness, promote solutions, and influence public and policy discourse on climate mobility.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is inviting young journalists, influencers, and storytellers from East, Horn, and Southern Africa to participate in a two-part online training series titled “Advancing the Potential of Young Media Practitioners to Scale Up Climate Mobility Reporting.” This initiative is designed for those passionate about reporting on the intersection of climate change and migration, two of the most pressing issues facing the region today.

The training will be offered in two sessions;

  1. 15 May 2025, 2pm EAT: Session 1. Introduction to climate mobility.
  2. 22 May 2025, 2pm EAT: Session 2. Effective communication strategies for reporting on Migration, Environment, and Climate Change.

Training Overview

This interactive training aims to:

  • Deepen participants’ understanding of the critical connections between migration, environment, and climate change.
  • Equip attendees with practical storytelling and communication skills tailored to climate mobility topics.
  • Foster connections among peers and experts across the region.
  • Provide resources to help craft impactful, solutions-oriented stories that can shape public discourse.
  • Young media practitioners in the region are encouraged not to miss this opportunity to amplify their voices and contribute to the evolving narrative around climate mobility.
