Background

The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), a German government company, has been supporting the global implementation of development policy goals. Field of activity

The sector project “Sustainable Financing for Development” advises the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) on the implementation of the “Addis Ababa Action Agenda” (AAAA) and supports the multilateral Financing for Development (FfD) process in its numerous sub-topics at various levels (United Nations, EU, OECD, G20, etc.).

The project’s activities focus mainly on three areas of action:

  • International positioning in the policy field of “International sustainable development financing
  • Partnerships and networks and
  • Analysis and trend monitoring. Preparation for the July 2025
  • International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) will guide the work in the sector project in the coming months.

Your tasks

The GIZ intern will be responsible for:

  • Support in providing strategic, development policy and technical advice to the BMZ.
  • Research and analysis on current issues and challenges in sustainable development financing, including reform of the international financial architecture, debt and public finance.
  • Following international expert discussions – trend and environment monitoring – on sustainable development financing, in particular the impact of the multiple global crises on sustainable development financing.
  • Support in the preparation and analysis of the negotiations on FfD4 and negotiations of the UN General Assembly in the Second Committee.
  • Content and logistical preparation of internal and external events, including the preparation of minutes.
  • Administrative and organizational support of the sector project.

Your profile

  • At least a completed Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area; ideally you are currently studying for a Master’s degree or have just completed your Master’s degree
  • Expertise in development finance, macroeconomics, financial policy, financial system development and/or sectoral finance is desirable
  • Very good skills in writing and editing texts in different political and multilateral contexts (publications, speeches, background information)
  • Initial practical work experience is an advantage
  • Very good analytical skills as well as strong communication and organizational skills and the ability and enjoyment of working independently
  • Motivation, ability to work in a team and the ability to quickly familiarise yourself with new topics
  • Experience and knowledge of institutional actors and processes of sustainable development financing, including UN processes and negotiations, is an advantage
  • Fluent German and English skills. Knowledge of another foreign language is an advantage
  • Good knowledge of common MS Office programs

The GIZ internship is only possible if you are currently enrolled, are in further training of which the completion of an internship is an integral part, or if you graduated no more than 6 months ago at the start of the internship.
