Organizational Context

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The mission of UNIDO, as described in the Lima Declaration adopted at the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013 as well as the Abu Dhabi Declaration adopted at the eighteenth session of UNIDO General Conference in 2019, is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States.

This UNIDO internship position is located at the UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna in the Office of the Director of the Division of regional Bureaus and Field Coordination.

Duties and Responsibles

The Intern shall work under the direct supervision of an officer designated by the Director of the Division and shall be engaged as follows:

  1. Exposed to the regular core functions of the Office of the Director and as such shall have the opportunity to observe the day-to-day operations and engage in on-the-job training in specific actions delegated by the Supervisor.
  2. Engaged in a specific self-contained assignment described below:
    • Support the Director and the Office of the Director in the daily work with the five Regional Bureaus and UNIDO field offices.
    • Support the compilation and preparation of submissions by GLO/RFO in response to taskings by other organizational units of UNIDO.
    • Contribute to drafting, finalization and/or make necessary follow ups with relevant RFO colleagues for the required material for senior management on issues under the purview of GLO/RFO;
    • Contribute to the organization of meetings, events with Member States’ representatives and other counterparts at the UNIDO headquarters and produce meeting reports and other documents;
    • Support the division in the overall organization of capacity building related activities in particular with/for the field offices;
    • Assist in other tasks as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
  1. Other Special emerging Projects that may enhance the learning experience of the Intern.

The Intern will be required to prepare an end-of-internship report, which will be submitted to and cleared by UNIDO Internship Coordination.

Minimum Organizational Requirements

Age: Minimum 20 years on the first day of the internship.

Education: Enrolled in a university degree programme; or begin the internship within one year of completing a university degree; or completed a university degree and be sponsored as part of an academic or development programme.

Field of specialization: International relations, political science, economics, development studies and or any other relevant social sciences

Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

Other skills: Solid computer skills, including proficiency in the use of MS Office programs

Learning Elements

  • Become acquainted with the most up-to-date technical, economic and industrial developments in the relevant field of specialization of the Office of the Director. Furthermore, intern is expected to deepen their knowledge in the fields of new product/services and process design.
  • Gain experience in regional coordination, external relationship, and programme management.
  • On the job training: participation in every phase of the working process.
  • Gain experience in working effectively in a diverse and multi-cultural environment.
