AfriLabs is a network organization and is the largest pan-African network of over 500 innovation and technology hubs across 53 African countries. It is a network organization that supports 400 technology and innovation hubs in 52 African countries. AfriLabs was founded in 2011 with the vision of building a thriving innovation economy in Africa driven by the power of its community. The organization believes that supporting the development of the African technology and innovation ecosystem enables Africa to participate in the global knowledge and innovation market place thereby stimulating economic growth.

AfriLabs mission is to support innovation hubs and their communities to raise high-potential entrepreneurs that will stimulate economic growth and social development in Africa. This is done through capacity building, financing, networking, policy advocacy and providing insightful reliable data.

Job Role & Person- Specification

AfriLabs is looking for an experienced Policy Officer to play a critical role in advocating for policy reforms that promote innovation and economic growth across Africa. The ideal candidate will be responsible for researching and analyzing policies, tracking local and international policy developments, and engaging with stakeholders to advance policy initiatives that drive sustainable development and innovation. This role requires a forward-thinking approach and a strong understanding of Africa’s innovation ecosystem.

Responsibilities: 

  • Policy Research & Analysis: Conduct in-depth research on policies impacting Africa’s innovation ecosystem. Identify emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities to influence policy reform.
  • Advocacy & Engagement: Build and manage relationships with policymakers and stakeholders to advocate for policies that promote economic development and innovation.
  • – Legislative Monitoring: Provide regular updates and insights on legislative and regulatory developments relevant to AfriLabs and the broader innovation community.
  • Policy Strategy Development: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to shape and mainstream policies that support the growth of Africa’s innovation ecosystem.
  • Campaign Leadership: Design and lead policy advocacy campaigns, using data-driven insights to prioritise and communicate AfriLabs’ policy objectives.
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Collect, analyse, and present both quantitative and qualitative data to support policy decisions and strategic initiatives.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Draft policy documents, literature reviews, and comprehensive reports that communicate AfriLabs’ policy priorities and provide evidence-based recommendations.

Required Skills, Qualifications & Abilities: 

Qualifications

  • A degree in politics, research, public administration, social work, social policy, policy studies or a relevant field. 

Experience

  • Education: Advanced degree in political science, public policy, international relations, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 4 years in policy analysis or advocacy, ideally focused on African political and policy landscapes.
  • Skills:
    • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with proficiency in drafting reports, presentations, and policy documents.
    • Stakeholder Engagement: Proven ability to build relationships with government officials and other key stakeholders.
    • Strategic & Analytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving skills, with a strategic approach to policy challenges.
    • Organisational Skills: Highly organised, with strong project management abilities to handle multiple responsibilities effectively.
    • Language: Fluency in English, with proficiency in at least one other African language preferred.
    • Data Analysis: Skilled in data collection and analysis.
