The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Core Project on  Regional Information for Society (RIfS) is offering two postdoc positions to contribute to its activities in Africa.  The postdocs will work collaboratively to support the core foci of the RIfS Africa action in the CLARE Programme, under supervision of the host institutions in Africa with oversight by the RIfS Africa Science Officer and the RIfS Africa Task Team. These Post-Doctoral Research fellowships are designed to contribute to improving WCRP understanding of the use and challenges of climate information for climate adaptation in Africa.

  • Postdoc 1: Climate services and stakeholder engagement.
  • Postdoc 2: Robust climate information for adaptation. 

Call for Postdoctoral Scientists

Applications are invited for either of the two Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships as
described below.

  • Postdoc 1: Climate services and stakeholder engagement. Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field that includes engagement with decision makers. The successful applicant will be responsible for supporting the core activities of the project in relation to how climate information is accessed, used, and adopted in climate adaptation decision making.
  • Postdoc 2: Robust climate information for adaptation. Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field of physical climate science. The successful applicant will be responsible for supporting the activities in relation to the generation, analysis, and construction of robust regional climate information for adaptation.

Opportunities

As a successful applicant, you will be engaging with communities of researchers and practitioners working at the forefront of climate information for adaptation, while gaining exposure to and involvement with the WCRP global community. You will be free to develop your own line of research aligned with the core responsibilities and actions of the RIfS activities. The work is considered foundational to advancing a research agenda by and for Africa, and you will gain visibility and access to new opportunities within and beyond Africa, while being in a position to help steer the research frontiers.

Core Responsibilities

The postdocs responsibilities will include:

  • Engage with multiple CLARE projects participants in Africa
  • Support design and implement pilot actions on robust information for decision makers
  • Synthesize knowledge and lessons learned from the CLARE projects and pilot actions
  • Help coordinate collaboration meetings and associated activities under RIfS Africa Task Team
  • Develop your own thread of aligned research
  • Lead to or contribute to the publication of academic papers and reports
  • Travel around multiple African institutions as needed to facilitate pan-African knowledge

  • Other tasks as they emerge from the work and are aligned with the postdoc foci

Requirements:

  • A PhD in a relevant field and awarded within the last 5 years
  • A full-time resident in Africa eligible to work in a university or research institution in the continent
  • A demonstrable ability to both work independently, under supervision and as part of a diverse team of experts
  • Demonstrated research experience in the area of interest
  • Able to take initiative to conceive and solve research questions
  • Work effectively in diverse organizational and cultural contexts
  • Strong language skills in either English or French, with at least good proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Willingness to travel and be resident for stays of between 8 to 12 months at different host institutions in Africa.

Additional requirements for the postdoc in Climate services and stakeholder engagement:

  • Experience in engaging with decision makers
  • Skills in developing and analyzing qualitative data

Additional requirements for the postdoc in Robust climate information for adaptation:

  • Skills to work with complex and diverse climate data (e.g., climate observations/model outputs, satellite climate estimates, reanalyses, etc.) and analysis, including coding (e.g., python, R, etc.) skills
  • Experience in the development and assessment of climate information for climate impact and adaptation measures
  • Competency with statistical analyses

Salary

The fellowship award is USD 25,000 per year, and commensurate with a strong postdoc at a leading university in Africa. The successful candidate should have the ability to receive and manage the funds to support themselves during their visiting residencies at the host institutions.
