Work fully remote as a Social Media Intern at Open Environmental Data Project and Public Environmental Data Partners ($20 / hr): Apply Now

Open Environmental Data Project and Public Environmental Data Partners are hiring a Social Media Intern to support the management and maintenance of its social media accounts and websites. This position is best suited for college-level or early career communications professionals, but Open Environmental Data Project and Public Environmental Data Partners welcome anyone who’s interested!

Background

Open Environmental Data Project (OEDP) builds spaces to grow the global conversation on environmental data access and use. Through pilots, workshops, research, and narrative building, OEDP works to (re)build trust between communities, government, civil society, and science. By examining how data moves between these different groups, OEDP aims to improve the usability and accessibility of environmental and climate data for better understanding, policy, and governance.

OEDP co-convenes the Public Environmental Data Partners (PEDP), a coalition of environmental, justice, and policy organizations, academic researchers, archivists, and students who rely on federal datasets and tools to support critical research, advocacy, policy, and litigation work. PEDP mission is to preserve, protect, and expand public access to climate and environmental data and tools.

Open Environmental Data Project and Public Environmental Data Partners are recruiting a social media intern to refine and maintain the social media accounts and web presence for both OEDP and PEDP.

Intern Job Responsibilities

  • Support the management of OEDP’s social media accounts by creating and posting regular content across LinkedIn, Instagram, Bluesky, and monthly updates via Substack.
  • Support the management of PEDP’s social media accounts by creating and posting regular content across LinkedIn and Bluesky, as well as quarterly updates via newsletter on Mailerlite.
  • Understand and help shape the overall concept of each organization, including the brand, audience(s), and program goals.
  • Create copy for captions and alt-text for images for social media postings.
  • Monitor various social media platforms, such as LinkedIn, Instagram, Bluesky, Facebook, and Substack. Generate quarterly reports to help track engagement and followers.
  • Provide suggestions to team members for improving internal processes and experiences on social platforms.
  • Engage with followers across social media channels.
  • Regularly update OEDP’s website (via Sanity) and PEDP’s website (currently via Squarespace).

The Intern will be expected to commit, on average, 15-20 hours per week. The intern position is fully remote, though preference will be given for people who are familiar with the US policy landscape.

This intern position is compensated at an hourly rate of $20, paid upon bi-weekly submissions of time sheets. If the candidate is enrolled in an undergraduate program with a related area of study, OEDP and PEDP are happy to work with the candidate’s school to offer course credit.

This intern position will be supervised by OEDP’s Director of Communications & Engagement, with whom you will meet bi-weekly and from whom you will receive mentorship.

Intern Qualifications / Skills

If you have some, but not all, of the following qualifications and skills, OEDP and PEDP encourage you to apply!

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program or working as a young professional, and looking to gain experience in environmental and/or science communications.
  • Enthusiasm for climate and environmental justice, climate and environmental policy, and science communication.
  • Experience with online engagement (this can be via personal social media accounts, too).
  • Verbal and written communication skills.

  • An eye for presentation and aesthetics/design.
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, the following software: Canva, Squarespace, Sanity.
