About the Role
The Multilingual Communications Officer (Maternity Cover) is responsible for ensuring that CIVICUS content is accessible in multiple languages (English, Spanish, and French as standard and other languages as required). The Multilingual Communications Officer ensures that website content, digital/social channels, media outputs, and advocacy materials reach and engage diverse linguistic audiences. Core languages are English, Spanish and French.
This role is crucial for maintaining equitable access to information, strengthening CIVICUS’s global engagement, and ensuring consistency across translations and multilingual platforms.
Areas of Responsibilities & Key Activities
Multilingual Communications Strategy Development
- Ensure translated content effectively reaches target audiences, measuring engagement across language-specific platforms.
- Work closely with regional engagement teams to localize key content and enhance accessibility.
Multilingual Content Creation & Management- Draft, edit, and publish multilingual content (text, video, graphics, blogs, and reports), ensuring high-quality engagement across French, Spanish, and English channels.
- Manage and coordinate CIVICUS Español and other regional social media accounts, developing tailored messaging for different linguistic communities.
- Oversee and maintain CIVICUS multilingual websites, ensuring timely updates, accuracy, and engagement growth.
- Support crisis communications needs by ensuring rapid translation and distribution of important messages.
Translation, Editing, and Quality Control
- Translate and adapt CIVICUS communication materials for Spanish and French audiences, maintaining alignment with CIVICUS’s style guide and glossary.
- Provide editorial oversight of translated content, ensuring accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and consistency.
- Manage external translation consultants, ensuring quality control and timely delivery.
- Centralize content translation requests from different clusters, maintaining a structured workflow with a vetted list of 20+ translators.
Digital & Multimedia Localization
- Oversee the translation of videos, infographics, toolkits, and digital reports, ensuring seamless user experiences in multiple languages.
- Ensure localization of digital advocacy content, ensuring multilingual accessibility across all platforms.
- Support the production of subtitled, voiceover, or transcript multimedia materials.
Event webinar and translation services - Manage translation logistics for CIVICUS webinars, including Zoom interpretation channels and multilingual transcription services.
- Organize Twitter Spaces and live multilingual discussions, coordinating member conversations in Spanish and French.
- Assist in advocacy event translations, ensuring real-time accessibility for CIVICUS partners and stakeholders Other
- The role holder will from time to time be required to carry out any other duties that are within the scope of the job.
Key Requirements
- Degree or diploma in communications, translation, linguistics, international relations, or a related field.
- Fluent written and spoken proficiency in English, Spanish, and French (additional UN languages or global south languages desirable
- 2 years of experience in strategic multilingual communications within advocacy, international development, or civil society.
- Proven experience in editing, translation, and transcreation of content for advocacy and engagement.
- Strong writing and storytelling abilities, ensuring accessibility and engagement across languages.
- Experience managing multilingual digital platforms, including websites and social media accounts.
- Familiarity with SEO best practices for multilingual content.
- Strong IT skills, including content management systems (CMS), translation software, and digital content production tools.
- Graphic design proficiency (Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
Desirable Knowledge, skills and Experience
- Experience working in international advocacy or human rights organizations.
- Working proficiency in other UN languages (Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin).
- Photography, filmmaking, or video editing experience for localized storytelling.
