Overview

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the focus of the political process to address climate change. The UNFCCC secretariat supports the Convention, its Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement through a range of activities, including substantive and organizational support to meetings of the Parties and the implementation of commitments. It is a dynamic organization working in a politically challenging environment to help resolve one of the defining environmental issues of our time.

Purpose

The Private Sector Resource Mobilization and Partnerships Consultant position is located in the UNFCCC secretariat in Bonn, Germany, in the Resource Mobilization and Partnerships (RMP) Unit. The RMP Unit leads the coordination of resource mobilization and partnership activities for the secretariat. The consultancy will support the Strategic Partnerships Coordinator, who is responsible for secretariat-wide coordination of resource mobilization and partnerships with philanthropies, the private sector and high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs).

Under the supervision of the Strategic Partnerships Coordinator, the consultant will provide specialized analytical and partnership development expertise to identify, assess and advance strategic private sector partnership opportunities and non-Party funding streams aligned with UNFCCC priorities. The assignment requires specialized knowledge of partnership development, resource mobilization strategies, stakeholder analysis and private sector engagement approaches.

Tasks

Particular activities of the Private Sector Resource Mobilization and Partnerships Consultant include:

Private sector prospect identification and analysis: Identify and assess prospective private sector partners aligned with UNFCCC priorities; conduct research on companies’ climate strategies, sustainability commitments and partnership potential; prepare briefs and recommendations for engagement.
Partnership development and engagement: Support development of partnership concepts, pitch materials and engagement strategies for priority private sector partners; contribute to follow-up actions and advancement of partnership opportunities.
Private sector pipeline analysis: Analyze priority sectors, companies and partnership opportunities; prepare periodic assessments and recommendations on engagement approaches, partnership potential and resource mobilization opportunities.
Proposal and briefing development: Support preparation of partnership concepts, briefing materials and proposals; coordinate inputs to ensure alignment with secretariat priorities and expected outcomes.
Strategic event and roundtables: Support preparation of high-level roundtables, bilateral meetings and partner engagements involving private sector actors; contribute background research, briefing materials and follow-up recommendations.
Reporting and analysis: Prepare concise analytical updates on partnership opportunities, outreach efforts and pipeline developments; provide recommendations to support strategic decision-making on private sector engagement.
Other responsibilities: Perform other duties as required to support the private sector engagement workstream under the Strategic Partnerships Coordinator.

Requirements

Educational

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Management, Business Administration, Economics, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Development Studies or related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

Required:

A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in partnerships, resource mobilization, business development, stakeholder engagement or related fields.
Experience conducting stakeholder research, opportunity assessments, partnership development and engagement with external stakeholders, particularly private sector entities, is required.

Asset/s:

Work experience in an international organization or multicultural environment.
Work experience in the private sector, particularly in sustainability, consulting, partnerships or business development.
Experience in climate action, sustainable development or ESG-related issues.
Experience preparing partnership proposals, funding materials or partnership strategies.
Experience supporting high-level stakeholder dialogues, roundtables or partnership initiatives involving senior private sector representatives.

Language skills:

Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
