LSE School of Public Policy is hiring a Research Assistant in Economics. This role offers an exciting opportunity to join the new Policy Hub, part of the Huth Initiative for a New Political Economy (HINPE), a major research programme at LSE focused on developing the ideas, policies and institutions needed to build a more resilient and prosperous economic system
Overview
LSE is seeking two motivated, independent, and highly skilled Assistant Economists to work in a new Policy Hub, part of the Huth Initiative for a New Political Economy (HINPE). The HINPE is a major new research programme at LSE that brings together leading academics to develop the ideas, policies and institutions for a more resilient economic system that delivers broad-based prosperity. The Initiative includes both a core research programme and a Policy Hub focused on translating ideas into practice. The latter is designed to grow over time into a permanent Institute for a New Political Economy.
The main purpose of these Research Assistant in Economics roles will be to support the Policy Hub by managing and analysing data sets, overseeing projects, communicating with research authors, commissioning and editing articles, and managing meetings with external policy partners. It is also expected that the Assistant Economists will become an active participant in the research programme.
Applicants should have completed (or have nearly completed) a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and/or a Master’s degree in economics, public policy, political science, or other closely related discipline. They should also have familiarity with relevant literatures and methods in economics and political economy. They should also have proven experience analysing quantitative data using Python, R, or Stata, including data cleaning and statistical analysis. Furthermore, candidates must demonstrate an in-depth understanding of UK and public and economic policy through relevant academic, professional and/or applied experience. Writing will be a vital part of this role, and candidates will be required to undertake a written assessment should they be shortlisted for interview.

Knowledge and experience required
- Have completed (or nearly completed) a Bachelor’s degree and/or a Master’s degree in economics, public policy, political science, or other closely related discipline
- Demonstrate familiarity with relevant literatures and research methods in the fields of economics, political economy and political science.
- Proven experience analysing quantitative data using Python, R, or Stata, including data cleaning and statistical analysis.
- Experience designing and delivering research projects, including defining data requirements and selecting appropriate methodologies.
- Strong organisational and planning skills, high attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Experience in planning and writing short-form (1000-2000 word) analyses of economics, politics, philosophy or political science.
- Have a strong, in-depth understanding of UK public and economic policy and its institutional context, demonstrated through relevant academic, professional, or applied experience.
- Professional or academic experience relevant to HINPE’s core themes, including good jobs, community and local policy, state capacity, and industrial strategy
