The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) is an inter-disciplinary research centre at the heart of the European University Institute (EUI). It was established in 1992 to complement the four EUI disciplinary departments (Economics, History and Civilization, Law, Political and Social Sciences) with the aim to be involved in both basic and policy research, collaborate with other centres of excellence in Europe, provide opportunities for young scholars and promote dialogue with the world of practice.

The Centre’s goal is to maintain an environment and support structure that fosters intellectual curiosity and excellent research. The research agenda of the Centre is currently guided by three major themes: Integration, Governance and Democracy; Regulating Markets and Governing Money; and 21st Century World Politics and Europe.

The Loyola de Palacio (LdP) Chair on Energy is the academic counterpart of the Florence School of
Regulation (FSR) – Energy. Founded in 2008, the Chair honours Loyola de Palacio, the former Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Energy and Transport (1999-2004). The Loyola de Palacio Chair focuses on the interconnected fields of energy economics, law and regulation as well as geo-politics. Its goal is to produce in-depth research of the highest quality relating to EU energy policy. The Chair’s fields of expertise and close connections to both European and national energy policy communities allow to contribute to current debates and to be a bridge between academia and practice in contemporary Europe.

About the project

The Loyola de Palacio (LdP) Chair on Energy focuses on the interconnected fields of energy economics, law and regulation as well as geo-politics. Its goal is to produce in-depth research of the highest quality relating to EU energy policy.

Research Assistant Job description

The research assistant will provide research assistance to the Directors of the project.

Main tasks include:

  • Researching the ongoing reform of electricity markets in Europe;
  • Analysing the latest developments to modernise distribution networks to support the energy transition with regulatory challenges such as anticipatory investments, the assessment of flexibility needs, calculating of hosting capacity, and flexible connection agreements;
  • Following up on, and contributing to, the latest developments on DSO topics arising from the EU Electricity Market Design reform, EU Action Plan for Grids and the new Network Code on Demand Response;
  • Contributing to the development of an executive training course on distribution grids.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • BA in Economics, Engineering or related field;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of energy regulation in Europe acquired through previous research and/or working experience.Desirable:
  • MA in Economics, Engineering or related field;
  • Proven experience in working on energy markets;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of modelling tools.

Languages

Excellent knowledge of English, both spoken and written. Knowledge of other languages constitutes an advantage.
