Stockholm Environment Institute is hiring for a Policy Fellow: Apply Now

Overview

Join the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) as Policy Fellow, driving international collaboration for a low-carbon future in heavy industry.

The Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) is a public-private initiative launched in 2019 by the governments of Sweden and India, focusing on low-carbon transitions in the heavy industry sector. LeadIT connects countries and companies from advanced and emerging economies, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions in industry by 2050. Currently, LeadIT includes 18 countries and 27 companies, with its Secretariat hosted by SEI in Stockholm.

The LeadIT mission for 2024-2026 introduced three pillars of work – one being a global voice and forum for issues around a just and equitable industry transition. A particular focus is on the role of an inclusive platform for policy dialogue, technical cooperation and research to reduce carbon emissions in heavy industry.

The role

This full-time role is crucial for maintaining momentum in driving international collaboration, developing industry transition partnerships and supporting public-private cooperation to accelerate industrial decarbonization, in line with LeadIT’s 2024-2026 mission.

You will define and develop work areas and contribute to the global industrial decarbonization agenda, in close collaboration with colleagues and partners. The Policy Fellow work is highly multisectoral, encompassing innovation, industry and trade policies, as well as climate and sustainability affairs.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead LeadIT’s global policy work, including the development of new working models for the 2026 work plan, delivering the action plan and maintaining smooth daily operations with stakeholders.
  • Drive strategic engagement with current and prospective Member States.
  • Lead the exploration and development of potential new projects.
  • Coordinate policy development initiatives related to global industry transition, including drafting policy papers, conducting country missions and developing roadmaps.
  • Engage proactively with member States and partners for effective outreach and impactful communications.
  • Develop and implement sustainable working methods, define strategic direction and build partnerships to deliver LeadIT’s mission.
  • Ensure the implementation of the LeadIT mission statement and annual work plans.
  • Represent LeadIT internally and externally.
  • Perform any other duties within the LeadIT mandate as assigned.

Who you are

  • SEI is seeking a professional with at least six years of experience in project management and policy engagement in areas like industry transition, climate change mitigation, critical minerals, trade, industry, innovation or corporate sustainability.
  • Experience working in or with heavy industries, or technical knowledge of these sectors, is highly beneficial. Expertise in the energy sector, industrial supply chains, or emissions reduction, especially in low- and middle-income countries, is preferred.
  • Relevant experience includes working with industry, multilateral organizations and governments on issues related to the green transition, with knowledge of areas such as carbon pricing and trade.
  • You will work closely with other colleagues in the LeadIT Secretariat and the wider SEI team, under the supervision of the Head of the Secretariat.

Formal qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as engineering, economics or social sciences; a Ph.D. is considered an asset.
  • Strong background in green transition policy at the global level.
  • Excellent project management and program delivery skills.
  • Experience developing partnerships and working with governments and international entities.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft reports and policies.
  • Fluency in English; additional language skills are an advantage.
  • A track record of delivering program content to stakeholders.
  • Experience working within a governmental or international organization on green transition-related issues.

Required personal skills:

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments in a high-paced environment.
  • A supportive and collaborative team player, capable of mentoring colleagues within LeadIT and SEI.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in LeadIT’s core mission.
  • An existing network of relevant contacts in the field.
  • Ability to think creatively and adapt in dynamic and uncertain environments.
