Program Background
Horti-LIFE III is funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) and implemented by SNV-Ethiopia in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture. The aim is to contribute to the horticulture sector growth and reduce malnutrition by strengthening the extension service to improve the production, productivity, and food safety in the horticultural sector in gender-balanced and nutrition-sensitive way.
The project team consists of an international project manager, a deputy manager, and experts on horticultural production, fund management, seed multiplication, micro-finance, monitoring and evaluation, gender, and nutrition. In each of the seven regions where the project works, regional managers (one regional manager covers 4 regions in the south), senior horticultural experts, in addition to some 60 horticultural field staff working at woreda and cluster levels are appointed.
Objective of the SNV Internship
The Marketing and Communications Intern will be part of the National Horti-LIFE team, supporting communication activities aimed at increasing the visibility of the project in Ethiopia. The Communication and Marketing Intern will work under the close supervision of the National Communications officer.
This role provides a valuable learning opportunity for someone looking to gain hands-on experience in project communications, content creation, and event support within an international development context.
Job Description
The Marketing and Communications intern will be responsible for:
- Assist in coordinating press and media outreach, including tracking media mentions of Horti-LIFE and maintaining a basic press contact list.
- Support the team with logistics and documentation for the National Project Learning Event.
- Assist the project team and advisors with communication tasks, such as drafting presentation materials and supporting the application of corporate branding.
- Help ensure communication materials align with corporate branding guidelines by reviewing templates and seeking necessary approvals.
- Support in drafting and updating a simple communication plan for the remaining project period, under guidance.
- Visit selected project sites with team members to collect basic information, photos, and quotes for short write-ups such as blogs, social media posts, or internal newsletters.
Deliverables
- A simple report listing media mentions of Horti-LIFE during the SNV internship period, including links, dates, and key highlights.
- A collection of drafted communication materials, (e.g. briefs, social media posts, blogs, videos, photos)
- A well-organized digital photo archive with clear folders, file names, and basic metadata (location, date, description) for use by project staff.
- A basic communication strategy outline or framework for the remaining project period, developed with guidance from the SNV communications officer.
- Contributions to the planning and execution of the National Learning Event based in Addis Ababa.
Qualifications
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TECHNICAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field from an accredited university.
- 0–1 year of relevant experience through internships, volunteer work, or academic projects (previous internship experience is a plus).
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills in both English and Amharic.
- Basic knowledge of digital media tools (e.g., social media platforms, Canva, MS Office, or similar applications).
- Familiarity with blogging and active engagement on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn.
- A proactive and enthusiastic attitude, with the ability to work well in a team environment.
- High attention to detail, especially in writing and editing.
- Good organizational and time management skills; able to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Willingness to learn, adaptable, and dependable with a strong sense of responsibility.
- Comfortable working in a diverse and inclusive team setting
