Role Overview
GAYO is strengthening its Zero Waste portfolio to deliver urban and community-level solutions across Africa. This requires disciplined, high-quality program management across multiple technical workstreams and delivery teams. GAYO’s approach aligns with global zero-waste principles that prioritize prevention, reuse, and the recovery of materials without burning or harmful discharges to land, water, or air. The Zero Waste Portfolio Manager (Project Manager) is the operational lead responsible for day-to-day coordination and delivery of GAYO’s Zero Waste portfolio under the direction of the Zero Waste Director.
The Project Manager – Zero Waste supervises and coordinates Zero Waste Coordinators, Officers, and thematic teams and ensures that work across plastics, e-waste, organics/composting, methane mitigation, urban gardening, and food systems is implemented as one coherent portfolio with clear plans, trackers, quality standards, and measurable results.
This is a management and delivery role (not primarily an individual contributor role). The Project Manager – Zero Waste has both practical technical depth in zero waste systems and strong people-and-program leadership across multiple sites and stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Strengthen and manage a disciplined portfolio system by translating the approved annual workplan into quarterly delivery micro-plans, maintaining a live delivery tracker and reporting calendar, and actively managing the risk register with clear mitigation and escalation protocols.
- Operationalize and standardize existing technical standards across all workstreams (plastics, e-waste, organics/composting, methane mitigation, urban gardening, and food systems) by translating them into practical SOPs, quality checklists, and clear team-level guidance to ensure consistent, high-quality implementation.
Experience and Competencies
- At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in zero waste, solid waste management, circular economy, environmental management, or related fields.
- Demonstrated experience managing multi-stakeholder projects (government/municipal, community, private sector, and informal sector actors).
- Proven people management experience (direct supervision of teams and coordination of multiple workstreams).
- Strong practical understanding of plastics management, e-waste systems, organics/composting operations, and community-based waste models.
- Ability to translate strategy into workplans, trackers, SOPs, and reporting systems; strong delivery discipline.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including comfort working with basic waste data and performance dashboards.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; confident facilitation and stakeholder engagement capability.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office (Docs/Slides/Sheets, Word/PowerPoint/Excel)
