Background of the Institute

The International Institute of Humanitarian Law is an independent, non-profit humanitarian organization founded in 1970. The Institute, with headquarters in Sanremo, Italy and a Liaison Office in Geneva, Switzerland, organizes training courses in international humanitarian law, human rights, refugee law, and related issues. It promotes dialogue by organizing international conferences, meetings, and seminars for high-level government officials, scholars, and practitioners.

The mission of the Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law (the Department) is to enhance the knowledge and skills of government officials, international organizations, civil society representatives, and academics involved in working with individuals in need of protection, including refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless individuals, and migrants. Through its capacity-building initiatives and the exchange of experiences, the Department advocates for preserving human rights, thus complementing and augmenting the efforts of various stakeholders in the protection field. In 2024 alone, the Department’s team of more than 30 professionals from 16 countries developed and implemented 60 initiatives that benefited over 2300 participants from 167 countries.

The Institute enjoys a global reputation of excellence and has consultative status at ECOSOC, a participatory status at the Council of Europe, and observer status at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ExCom, as well as with the International Organization for Migration.

Purpose of the Position:

The Associate Coordinator (Partnerships and Advocacy for Protection) position is responsible for supporting the establishment and consolidation of partnerships in line with the Department’s mandate. Additionally, the Associate Coordinator (Partnerships and Advocacy for Protection) position involves drafting project proposals, coordinating and moderating advocacy-focused training, and supporting initiatives that amplify the Department’s mandate and outreach.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Contribute to establishing and consolidating relationships with new or current partner organizations in line with the Department’s mandate.
Conduct, in coordination with the Institutional Engagement Team, exploratory mapping of relevant potential international stakeholders and maintain and update the database of stakeholders.
Advise the Head of Unit on realistic and achievable partnership opportunities by prioritizing the best match between project activities and contributors’ areas of work.
Draft precise and effective concept notes and project proposals in coordination with the Institutional Engagement Team.
Prepare presentations, briefing notes, talking points, and notes for meetings and missions.
Support the identify and engage with key advocacy targets, including governments, international organizations, and civil society actors.
Collaborate with partners to amplify advocacy efforts on refugee, migration, and statelessness issues.
Lead the coordination of minimum two Online Courses on Advocacy for Protection by selecting participants, identifying facilitators, proposing teaching methodology, content update and moderating the live sessions.
Conduct research on the current situation and statistics related to refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless people, and migrants worldwide.
Perform any other tasks deemed necessary to achieve the Department’s objectives.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills:

Required

Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Political Science, Law, Development Studies, or a related field.
A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in advocacy, partnership-building, or fundraising within the humanitarian or development sectors.
Proven experience in drafting project proposals and donor reports.
Proven experience in the organization of online training initiatives.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
High level of organizational skills and attention to detail.

Desirable

Demonstrated knowledge of international refugee law, migration issues, and humanitarian principles.
Proficiency in additional UN languages, particularly Arabic, French or Spanish.
Knowledge of CRM systems or fundraising databases.
Graphic design or presentation software skills (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite).
