Hivos is looking for an advocacy and communication specialist who is passionate about climate justice to represent its Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) program in the Netherlands.
Job context
The VCA program aims to ensure that local civil society groups and organizations have claimed a central role as creators, implementers and advocates of local climate solutions by 2025. For Hivos, the climate crisis is about justice and human rights. Climate change has a devastating impact on people’s lives and rights and exacerbates existing inequalities. The heaviest burden falls on the shoulders of those who already live in poverty or belong to underrepresented groups such as Indigenous peoples, young people and women.
That is why the program specifically supports locally-designed climate solutions and builds broad climate alliances at the local level to amplify the voices of those most affected by the climate crisis. At the same time, it tries to influence national and global climate finance policies to fund locally-designed solutions. Voices for Just Climate Action is implemented by an alliance of six organizations (WWF NL, Hivos, SouthSouthNorth, Akina Mama wa Afrika, Slum Dwellers International, and Fundación Avina) and is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under its Power of Voices subsidy framework.
About the position
As Global Advocacy & Communication Officer, you are responsible for implementing VCA’s international and Dutch communication strategy. The strategy’s two main aims are strengthening the international advocacy work of the VCA alliance and raising the program’s profile in the Netherlands.
You work closely with Hivos’ Country Engagement Managers in five VCA countries, the Climate Justice and Innovation Officer, Global-Program Team members, and the Global Program Manager to ensure that all global climate lobby and communication efforts reinforce each other and are based on the specific needs of each country. In addition, you coach and support Program Officers (POs) in their communication tasks. You will also work closely with your counterparts from the other VCA alliance partners. In the Netherlands, there is particular cooperation with WWF-NL to coordinate communication and campaign initiatives.
In this Advocacy and Communication Specialist role, you report to the VCA Global Program Manager in Kenya.
Your responsibilities
Implementing the communication strategy
You carry out the program’s communication strategy and fine tune it as needed. This includes devising and organizing communication activities and developing and distributing communication materials that enhance the program’s visibility. The includes working with the project team members to profile and publish stories from the project. You also coach and advise colleagues regarding external positioning activities and look out for potential opportunities and risks.
Online strategy and content development
You write for the Hivos and VCA websites and develop various forms of online content (social media posts, illustrations, videos and infographics).
Agenda setting
You identify important topics and trends within Climate Justice for VCA to seize on. When VCA attends international events, you create partnerships and opportunities to garner support for Hivos’ strategies, ideas and activities among key decision-makers.
Gathering evidence
You commission and supervise research and/or other knowledge products that strengthen Hivos’ vision and contribute to the goals of the program and Hivos’ thought leadership.
Internal cohesion within the VCA alliance
You strengthen connection and cohesion within the VCA alliance by developing an internal communication strategy and promoting a shared understanding of the external positioning of the program.
Campaigns
You conceive, supervise and/or lead the development of relevant (lobby) campaigns, and uphold Hivos’ quality standards when managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Your profile
Hivos is looking for an expert in advocacy and communication with demonstrable experience in the field of climate justice.
Experience:
- Work experience in an international environment
- Experience in successfully positioning and representing an organization such as Hivos in various media and during important forums
- Experience in setting up, guiding and using research and knowledge products is a plus
Skills and knowledge:
- Excellent command of both Dutch and English
- Broad knowledge of the themes of climate rights, climate financing and climate action
- Effective at collaborating, influencing, communicating, managing relationships and leading
Personal qualities:
- You are a creative thinker who finds innovative ways to increase the impact of communication and advocacy.
- You have a high degree of integrity and an activist attitude.
- You are well-organized and structured in your work and plan for different eventualities.
