Overview

The Economic and Trade Policy Unit conducts research and provides capacity building support and advisory services to enable the transition to inclusive and green economies. Located within the UN Environment Programme Industry and Economy Division, in the Resources and Markets Branch seeks to conserve the environment, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable development by enhancing the capacity of governments, businesses, and civil society to integrate environmental considerations into economic, trade, and financial policies and practices in accordance with integrated policy-making approaches of sustainable development.

Over the past years, the focus of Resources and Markets Branch has been UNEP’s work related to Green Economy. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division works with International and nongovernmental organizations, national and local governments, business, and industry to develop and implement policies, strategies and practices that are cleaner and safer, incorporate environmental costs, use natural resources efficiently, reduce pollution and risks for humans and the environment, and enable the implementation of conventions and international agreements.

Tasks

Successful Economic and Environmental Interns will carry out research and provide support to Programme Managers in the following tasks:

  • Conduct a thorough background research and analysis/desk review of current environmental, trade policies, guidelines, and relevant topics at the nexus of trade, environment and sustainable development, across sectors such as textiles, agriculture, mining and metals, among others.
  • Support to draft and prepare knowledge products including, but not limited to, policy briefs, reports, case studies, briefing notes, presentations, ensuring that it is aligned to the UN systemwide advocacy and efforts at promoting environmental sustainability.
  • Conduct basic statistical analysis using relevant software (e.g. Excel)
  • Conduct literature reviews of macroeconomic research and methodologies, and synthesize the findings and insights.
  • Support in organizing and delivering key meetings, events and stakeholder engagements at the international trade and environment fora, and others as relevant.
  • Maintain and develop UNEP’s community of trade and environment database up to date.
  • The Economic and Environmental Intern will support other activities as requested. This recruitment is for an internship position within RMB’s Economic and Trade Policy Unit (ETPU). The ETPU internship is for six (6) months.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Economics, Environmental, Trade or Public Policy, Finance or related fields; b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); c) Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
