Data Management Internship (Division of Information Technology)
The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree
The purpose of the programme is:
- To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;
- To benefit the IAEA’s programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.
- The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.
Organizational Setting
The Division of Information Technology provides support to the IAEA in the field of information and communication technology (ICT), including information systems for technical programmes and management. It is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing an ICT strategy, for setting and enforcing common ICT standards throughout the Secretariat and for managing central ICT services. The IAEA’s ICT infrastructure comprises hardware and software platforms, and cloud and externally hosted services. The Division has implemented an IT service management model based on ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) and Prince2 (Projects in a Controlled Environment) best practices.
Main Purpose
Under the supervision of the Chief Data Officer (CDO), the Intern will work closely with team members and gain hands-on experience in supporting various data management and governance activities. This Data Management internship offers an opportunity to contribute to the execution of data strategy initiatives, learn about data integration architectures, and understand the fundamentals of data governance and project coordination within the organization.
Functions / Key Results Expected
The Intern will assist Data Management team in the following:
- Support Data Analysts by performing basic data analysis tasks, generating reports, and creating visualizations to aid in decision-making processes.
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of documentation related to data management processes, policies, and procedures.
- Support team members on the preparation of materials ahead of meetings and participate actively to them.
- Support team members in understanding business stakeholders’ data needs and help develop solutions that align with organizational goals.
- Support Data Architect in gathering information on best practices in data management and present findings to the team to help inform data strategy decisions.
- Assist in the collection, cleaning, and preprocessing of data to ensure its quality and readiness for analysis.
- Participate in cross-departmental data community of practice and knowledge sharing sessions to learn and contribute insights on data management practices.
- Assist in organizing events or workshops to foster a culture of continuous learning and collaboration among data practitioners.
- Any other assignments as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- University degree in Information technology, Business, Data Science, Management, Statistics, or related field.
- Basic understanding of data management, data/business analysis, statistics, software development and/or IT architecture would be an asset.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
Applicant Eligibility
- Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
- Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree.
- Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA’s internship programme.
- Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
