Greenpeace International seeks candidates to serve as Board members starting in Q1 2026. Successful candidates will be elected at the Annual General Meeting in December 2025.

Greenpeace International is the coordinating body based in Amsterdam and works across the global network to coordinate campaigning, fundraising, coherence and maximise the
organisation’s impact.

About the position

The Greenpeace International Board consists of five to nine people. It is the guarantor of the integrity of the organisation and ensures adherence to internationally accepted good governance and financial management standards. It approves Greenpeace International’s budget and audited accounts, and appoints and supervises Greenpeace International’s executive director.

Board members are appointed for a three year term with options for extension, and should expect a workload of approximately 30 – 40 days per year.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance for setting the strategic direction of GPI.
  • Monitor GPI’s programmes and activities to ensure they are aligned with our mission in terms of both short term goals and long term vision.
  • Ensure executive performance through the setting and review of objectives and performance indicators.
  • Work with the International Executive Director and the Senior Management Team to ensure the adequacy and integrity of reporting provided both to the board and other essential stakeholders.
  • The board is globally distributed and this role requires willingness to participate in meetings at varied times of the day. There is also some travel required for in-person meetings.

Priority criteria:

This year Greenpeace is seeking two new Board members, amongst which aim to fulfill the following
areas of experience and expertise as priorities:

  • Experience with and knowledge of people-powered movements that center around justice/rights in environmental advocacy and constituency building.
  • Familiarity with intersectional environmental and social justice issues in the Global South, specifically with experience in Latin America and/or Asia.
  • Ability to provide oversight expertise and strategic guidance on fundraising and its intersection with environmental campaigning and people power, to ensure financial sustainability and resilience.
  • An understanding of how these fundraising models vary based on philanthropic program strategy, geography / demography, socio-economic environments, technology use, and culture, that would support the organisation to yield growth in our programs.
  • Experience and skills in strategic technology deployment, in particular digital communication related to delivering successful campaign and fundraising outcomes.

General Criteria:

The following criteria are general attributes that Greenpeace seek amongst its Board members.

Mission Relevant Knowledge and Expertise:

  • Deep and wide experience working on the climate and biodiversity crises with a systemic change-focused advocacy agenda. Knowledge of, or experience in, the ecosystem of global campaigning organizations or networks.
  • Experience working in global organizations or movements, cross-cultural competencies, and/or experience in values- and mission-driven organizational change.
  • Background and experience in advancing justice, equity, diversity, and safety in complex organizations or networks.
  • Experience in the recruitment, induction, and retention of executive-level staff.
  • Commitment to non-violent direct action and civil disobedience as legitimate means of
  • making change.

Experience with – and interest in – Greenpeace’s campaign issues, Governance, Oversight, and Financial Knowledge:

  • Expertise in non-profit governance either as an executive of a complex global organization and/or applied or academic knowledge of governance systems and best practices.
  • Understanding and practice of organizational strategic planning.
  • Understanding of legal and other risk mitigation, particularly in the context of taking deliberate, managed, strategic risks to achieve campaigning or organizational objectives.
  • Financial literacy to review and oversee budgets, with capacity to identify major risks.
  • Awareness of the legal implications in terms of liability related to the role of Board members.

Values Alignment and Work Capacity:

  • Possession of principles and integrity in alignment with Greenpeace’s values, including a clear understanding of Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Safety.
  • Willingness to commit to the organization and the Board.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a consensus and collaborative decision-making environment.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
