Graça Machel Trust is Looking for a Gender and Social Inclusion Consultant for development of Online Curriculum and Training Content
Programme information
The Graça Machel Trust was established in 2010 and is a registered non-profit Public Benefit Organisation based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Its mission is to amplify women’s movements, influence governance, promote women’s contributions and leadership in Africa’s economic, social, and political development, and advocate for protecting children’s rights and dignity. As a pan-African institution, the Trust has a presence in 16 countries across the African continent through its Women’s Networks and Strategic Partnerships.
The Women Creating Wealth (WCW) programme is a leading entrepreneurship initiative to empower and inspire women entrepreneurs. It focuses on enhancing their mindset, confidence, and skills to overcome challenges and elevate their businesses from income generators to wealth creators. The programme integrates Trust’s women’s rights and advancement processes to bolster businesswomen’s confidence, enabling them to lead, engage, influence, and create opportunities in specific sectors while addressing structural barriers. While capacity-building programmes enhance entrepreneurs’ knowledge and resilience for managing growth, the Trust’s network-building and advocacy efforts identify and address challenges beyond individual control, requiring a collective response to create a more favourable environment for women entrepreneurs.
WCW has already made an impact with 500 alumni entrepreneurs in the Southern Africa region, including South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania. Currently, the accelerator programme is being offered to over 1000 entrepreneurs across seven (7) countries, namely South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and Senegal. The goal for the next five years is to reach 10,000 businesswomen across Africa, inspire and equip them with skills, tools, and networks to scale their businesses, and create $1 Billion in value and 200,000 jobs.
Overall, the program seeks to achieve the following objectives:
- Build leadership and entrepreneurship skills for women entrepreneurs.
- Ensure access to finance and markets for women entrepreneurs.
- Provide work opportunities for youth linked with these women entrepreneurs.
- Foster a thriving business environment for women entrepreneurs.
Purpose
Promoting women and young entrepreneurs contributes to broader social and economic goals such as poverty reduction, job creation, and community development. However, for economic empowerment and entrepreneurship programs to register the intended outcomes, there is need to ensure that the concept of gender and social inclusion is incorporated right from project design to execution. Gender and social inclusion foster a more dynamic and vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem, where diverse perspectives and experiences drive creativity, resilience, and sustainable growth.
As one way of fostering the Trust’s commitment to fostering economic growth and innovation through entrepreneurship, the organisation would like to reinforce its approach to addressing gender and social inclusion within its programmes. This may require ensuring that the necessary capacity is built inorder to fully understand and implement inclusive practices, resulting in the capability to address the persistent biases and systemic barriers that disproportionately affect women and socially marginalised individuals.
To overcome these challenges and ensure that all individuals have equitable access to entrepreneurial opportunities including addressing barriers that women and youth face in their entrepreneurship journey, it is crucial to provide a variety of targeted capacity building programs for the Trust’s staff, partners and programme participants. Doing so will equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote an inclusive and supportive ecosystem, ultimately enhancing the impact and success of the Trust’s entrepreneurship initiatives.
Therefore, it is against this background that the Trust through the WCW-I Programme seeks to engage the services of a seasoned gender and social inclusion consultant to undertake a capacity building program in gender and social inclusion. This shall involve developing a curriculum on gender and social inclusion plus a plan of action.
