This is why the Remote Sensing team of experts are looking forward to welcome you as (Junior) Remote Sensing Expert at GRAS headquarters in Cologne.
The (Junior) Remote Sensing Expert has the objective to develop remote sensing and geoinformation methodologies, workflows and data processing components. Your main duties will be:
- To develop and optimize remote sensing routines to characterize land use change, deforestation, and deforestation risk, with the aim of assessing deforestation-free supply chains globally.
- Operationalize new earth observation research and emerging technologies by translating into applicable working steps.
- Solving technical glitches within the GRAS remote sensing team and collaborate with external scientific partners and institutions.
- Develop remote sensing strategies and tailored solutions to meet clients’ requirements in the domain of supply chain, biomass assessment, and carbon measurements in line with regulatory or voluntary carbon market standards.
- Develop and implement satellite-based measurements related to forest resilience (e.g., Land Surface Temperature, Aboveground Biomass).
- Develop and optimize approaches for identifying and differentiating between natural and cultivated grasslands, as well as savannas.
Your profile
- Master’s degree in Earth Observation, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing or related field
- Minimum 2 years of experience in developing remote sensing methodologies for land use change and deforestation mapping.
- Expertise in developing and optimizing remote sensing techniques and methods, and translating them into pragmatic workflows for land use change, deforestation, carbon measurements, and grassland and savanna classification.
- Expertise in Geographical Information System (GIS) Softwares (e.g., QGIS) and advanced skills in Google Earth Engine APIs (JavaScript and Python), Proficiency in Python and/or R to automate remote sensing and geospatial processing.
- Very good capabilities in machine learning modelling.
- Excellent English language skills (written and spoken); German language skills would be of advantage
- Familiarity with geospatial industry standards (e.g., COG, STAC).
- Knowledgeable in biomass and carbon stock estimation.
- Knowledge of Git version control system and adherence to clean coding practices.
- Familiar with carbon certification systems and relevant EU regulations (e.g., EUDR).
- Preferred: experience with scalable computing technologies in the natural resources domain.
