Area of ​​responsibility

The Competence Center for Financial System Development is embedded within the Department of Economic Affairs, Employment, and Social Affairs. It addresses a broad range of topics – from classic financial sector issues such as (digital) financial inclusion, insurance, and SME, start-up, and agricultural finance to highly topical, globally relevant issues. These include financial market reforms in crisis regions, environmental and climate finance, sustainable finance, the mobilization of private capital, and central bank digital currencies.

The Competence Center’s role within GIZ is to develop topics, seek innovative solutions, plan projects, and then provide expert conceptual advice during their implementation. Active knowledge management and international dialogue with German development cooperation partners are of central importance in this process.

Your tasks

The Intern in Financial System Development and Insurance will:

  • You will conduct research on projects and specific topics and participate in compiling results and experiences for the entire GIZ
  • They actively participate in the content-related and logistical preparation and follow-up of events, internal meetings, specialist trainings and workshops, including the global financial system development conference in spring 2026.
  • They provide conceptual and organizational support to the team in knowledge management and information exchange. This includes, among other things, organizing global communities of practice and creating, updating, and revising presentations and concept papers – both at the competence center and departmental levels.
  • They contribute to the conceptual design of measures in the area of ​​financial sector development and address overarching political issues.
  • They support individual team members in managing projects worldwide and in completing cross-functional tasks.
  • They participate in general meetings of the team and relevant departments within the company.

Your profile

  • You have completed your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Economics or related fields, or are about to complete your Master’s degree
  • Ideally, you have already gained initial experience or (basic) knowledge in the field of financial system development or the financial sector through internships or university work.
  • They have an interest in current issues and are particularly able to communicate very confidently in German and to convey complex topics in a way that is appropriate for the target audience.
  • They have initial experience in planning and conducting events or workshops.
  • You have very good German and English skills, both spoken and written (C1 level in each), knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
  • You maintain an overview in a diverse work environment, organize your workday efficiently, work in a structured and independent manner, and can quickly familiarize yourself with new topics.
  • Last but not least, you bring enjoyment of teamwork, good communication skills, and initiative.

Notes

The GIZ internship is only possible if you are currently enrolled at a university, are participating in a further education program that includes an internship as an integral part of your studies, or if your degree was awarded no more than 6 months prior to the start of the GIZ internship. The monthly intern salary is €2,349 (gross).
