Overview

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a global service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development dedicated to shaping a future worth living around the world. Since 2004, GIZ has been a reliable and trusted partner of the African Union (AU) to enhance inclusive growth and sustainable development on the African continent in line with the AU’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. With around 250 staff, GIZ African Union cooperates with the AU Commission, as well as the AU’s specialised institutions and agencies, such as the Development Agency AUDA-NEPAD, at continental, regional and national level in more than 40 member states. Key areas of engagement include Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention, Governance, Sustainable Economic Growth, Health and Social Development, as well as Just Transition.

The GIZ African Union Office headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with further staff based in South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania and Germany provides services and support in the areas of procurement, financial management, events and travel, human resources, internal operations, communication and portfolio management to all GIZ projects that are implemented in partnership with the African Union. 

Core Tasks 

The Data Management Specialist will process data in the commission management core process 3 and 4 from one or more GIZ projects (master data, structural data), e.g. in the SAP Portfolio and Project Management (PPM) in consultation and accordance with the responsible staff (including sector coordinators, programme/project and component/implementation managers, technical staff) for assigned projects in the GIZ African Union portfolio.  

  • Creating the master data, identifiers and object links for the assigned projects
  • Creating, in preparation for projects’ operational planning, the basic project structure in PPM, including outputs, key activities, and, if applicable, responsibilities and roles
  • Creating in PPM the basic structure for individual measures in assigned projects
  • Posting requests for internal assignments in PPM
  • Recording and following up risks in PPM at the level of the assigned projects (e.g. commercial, IT, and/or information security risks)
  • Registration for the final invoice for assigned projects
  • Supporting peer-learning among Data Management Specialists in GIZ African Union’s sectors and projects
  • Supporting projects on related matters, including processes driven by commissioning and third-party funding parties, and providing supporting documentation and tracking for managing the risks of delivering services under international law

Where appropriate and reasonable, the position holder is willing to perform tasks outside the scope of the job description.

Your Profile 

  • A Bachelors degree in Information Systems, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Data Management, Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science, or a related field. A Masters degree in Information Management, Data Science, Business Informatics, Project Management, or a related discipline is an asset.
  • Very good knowledge of commission/order management and project-level master data, gained in GIZ or a comparable international implementing agency
  • Very good communication and coordination skills
  • Full oral and written professional fluency in English (the portfolio’s working language)
  • Knowledge of German at a professional level is a strong advantage
  • Demonstrated understanding of complex, multi-stakeholder project portfolios (experience with continental, regional, or multi-country portfolios is an advantage)
  • Good understanding of project structures and control-relevant information
  • Work experience in the GIZ implementation structure or in comparable international cooperation or development organisations
  • Affinity with technical/digital systems, including SAP or comparable ERP/project management systems
  • Desirable: Experience in data acquisition and data processing in IT systems
  • Strong advantage: Previous experience working with SAP S/4HANA, particularly in Portfolio and Project Management (PPM)
