Exciting Remote Volunteer Opportunities at Climate Change AI: Join the CCAI Core Team!

Join the CCAI Core Team!

CCAI is looking for new core team members to play leading roles in the organization’s ongoing activities. CCAI Core team members are expected to dedicate 5-10 hours of remote volunteering time per week and work closely with other members of the organization to advance CCAI’s activities and operations. Most core team members have a background in either machine learning or areas relevant to climate change (such as energy, transportation, climate science, etc.), and a strong interest in both topics.

To be considered for a core team role, CCAI require the following:

  1. Mission alignment: Core team members must be passionate about catalyzing impactful work at the intersection of climate change and machine learning, per our mission and goals.
  2. Intersectional knowledge of AI and climate change: Core team members need to be able to apply their knowledge and judgment to ensure that the activities and content are scientifically sound, mission-aligned, and high quality.
  3. Curiosity: Working with CCAI provides the opportunity to learn about many different areas related to climate change and AI. To shape initiatives across a large umbrella of topics at this intersection, core team members are expected to demonstrate eagerness to learn about AI and climate change topics beyond their niche areas of expertise, and gain a higher-level view of the bigger picture of AI-for-climate more broadly.
  4. Community orientation and ethics: Core team members serve a diverse global community of stakeholders, which requires cognizance in shaping CCAI’s activities to be broadly beneficial, inclusive, and consistent with principles of ethics and equity.
  5. Leadership, proactiveness, and responsibility: Core team members scope, shape, and execute activities. It is essential for core team members to be able to define goals and take responsibility for ensuring that they get achieved. This includes stepping up in cases where some aspects of execution may not be neatly covered by existing systems or existing roles, and taking on a fair share of less interesting or visible tasks in addition to tasks that are “flashy.”
  6. Time commitment: Core team members are expected to dedicate 5-10 hours of volunteer time per week, including conference calls and synchronous working time, and be responsive on Slack. This includes flexibility to coordinate across multiple time zones.
  7. Attention to detail: Core team members are mindful of the work that they carry out, which helps CCAI ensure high quality in its activities.
  8. Team-orientedness: Team members must be able to work productively and collaboratively as part of a close-knit team, commit to learning from others and sharing learnings with others, be there for other team members, and otherwise foster a collegial and team-oriented environment.
  9. Comfort working in a digital environment: CCAI’s team is based across the world, and communicates primarily using Slack, G-Suite tools, and video conferencing tools. While we are happy to onboard newcomers to the particular technologies we use, core team members must in general be comfortable working and collaborating in a primarily digital environment.
  10. Wearing both role and organizational hats: In addition to executing on the direct responsibilities of their role, core team members are expected to contribute to the well-being of the organization as a whole, both via inputs to other ongoing activities (e.g., by contributing resources or reviewing outputs) and by contributing to the sustainability of CCAI’s operations (e.g., by creating systems, documenting learnings, onboarding other team members, and contributing to impact assessment). No one individual alone holds all relevant knowledge on AI and climate change, which requires collective engagement to shape and improve CCAI’s activities and resources.

Climate change is a global problem that requires global thinking. CCAI accept applications from anywhere in the world, and do not require a specific academic degree. While CCAI organizes in-person events from time to time, all of the core work is done remotely.

CCAI is a fast-moving and fun environment to help facilitate meaningful and immediate climate action with machine learning. Working with CCAI will provide you with opportunities to acquire new skills, expand your network, and curate knowledge. CCAI is an interdisciplinary and international team and believe that diversity, inclusion, and equity are not only fundamental to the organization but also to progress in addressing climate change as a whole.
