About CISES
The Centre for International Security and Economic Strategy (CISES) is a London-based independent think tank producing analysis on international security, economics and their intersection, while investigating other areas that influence these three central themes, such as emerging technology, defence, trade and international law. CISES offers a platform for young researchers to develop expertise, gain practical experience, and contribute to meaningful policy discussions.
Role Overview
As a Policy Analyst at CISES, you will contribute high-quality research and analysis on international security, defence, economics, and global affairs. You will have the freedom to pitch and develop your own research ideas while collaborating with an editorial team that provides guidance and support. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates seeking hands-on experience in think tank research and policy writing.
Key Responsibilities
As a Policy Analyst, you will:
- Conduct independent research on topics related to international security, defence, economics, and strategy.
- Pitch and develop research ideas in consultation with the editorial team.
- Produce written outputs in line with the workload options outlined below.
- Collaborate with other analysts in working groups on team-based projects.
- Maintain clear and timely communication and meet agreed deadlines.
Workload Expectations
CISES operates on an output-based contribution model. Each month, Policy Analysts are expected to complete one of the following:
- Four short-form pieces, OR
- Two medium-form pieces, OR
- One long-form piece.
A combination is also acceptable (e.g. two short-form and one medium-form piece). If working as part of a working group, the minimum expectation for that month is one (1) short-form piece, unless otherwise agreed with the editorial team. CISES recognises that academic, professional, or personal commitments may affect availability. Analysts are expected to communicate proactively if they anticipate difficulty meeting their monthly output, and adjustments can be agreed in advance.
Requirements
- Must be a current student (UG, PG, or doctoral) or a recent graduate (completed higher education in 2024 or later). You must be at least in your second year of tertiary education.
- Strong interest in international security, defence, economics, or global governance.
- Excellent written communication skills and ability to produce clear, concise, and well-structured analysis.
- Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work to deadlines.
- Previous research or policy experience is a plus but not required.
- Applicants are ideally based in the UK, EEA, North America, or Australia/New Zealand.
English Proficiency
Applicants should have Professional or Native English proficiency sufficient to produce clear, structured analytical writing.
