Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. 

The Strategy, Planning, Results and Effectiveness Division (SPRED) of UN Women is to integrate corporate strategy, results and performance measurement to improve decision-making in order to drive the implementation of UN Women’s Strategic Plan and to manage for results while increasing transparency and accountability to its Governing Bodies and Stakeholders. Specifically, the Division formulates corporate strategies aligned to the corporate objectives, ensures internal controls and risk management are fully in place. 

The Strategic Planning Unit (SPU) within SPRED is the custodian of Results-Based Management (RBM) and strategic planning in UN Women. SPU manages the development and roll-out of relevant policies, procedures and guidance (PPG) associated with planning, monitoring and reporting of the Strategic Plan, Strategic Notes and workplans. SPU also serves as the business owner for corporate systems associated with results management and strategic planning, monitoring and reporting functions. 

Under the supervision of the Programme Specialist, the Results-Based Management and PPG Intern will support the rollout of the Planning, Monitoring and Reporting (PMR) Policy and Procedures and the development of RBM learning material and the building and sharing of knowledge on RBM.

Description of Responsibilities

The Results-Based Management and PPG Intern will be responsible for the following:

  • Assist with Country Offices, Regional Offices, and Headquarters implementation of planning, monitoring, and reporting procedures and guidance by drafting emails, attending meetings, following up on pending meeting actions and providing quality assurance;   
  • Assist rolling out the PMR training package and organizing PMR training in collaboration with Regional Offices and HQ colleagues; 
  • Support SPU’s Work Planning and Annual Reporting exercises by providing coordination support and consolidating inputs from the team;
  • Assist in development and roll-out of communication materials using communications tools such as but not limited to SharePoint articles, Viva Engage posts, PowerPoint slides, and short videos, to increase the visibility and usage of the PMR Policy, Procedures and RBM materials; 
  • Assist in maintaining, updating, and monitoring the PPG, Planning and RBM intranet pages.

Learning objectives for the UN Women internship in this area:

  • The selected intern will be provided with hands-on learning opportunities to work in the area of policies and procedures, RBM, capacity building and knowledge management; 
  • The selected intern will gain exposure to the UN Women organization and have the opportunity to contribute to the implementation of procedures, the RBM approach and organizational capacity building;
  • The intern will be provided with networking opportunities and participate in workshops/ seminars for broader learning purposes.

Qualifications

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: research, knowledge management, public administration, business management, law, or other relevant subjects is required
  • Meet one of the following: 
  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); 
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); 
  3. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a two-year period of graduation; or 
  4. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements. 

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; 
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the UN Women internship.
