Area of activity

Approximately two-thirds of the partner countries of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) are affected by fragility and violent conflict. Furthermore, extreme natural events, as well as biological, technological, and human-caused hazards, increasingly pose a challenge. The sector project “Peace and Security, Disaster Risk Management” supports the BMZ in positioning itself on development policy issues within the context of bilateral and multilateral peacebuilding, security policy, and disaster risk management, and in further developing the conceptual foundations in these areas.

In the area of ”Disaster Risk Management,” the BMZ supports partner countries in integrating risk reduction more effectively into national strategies and policies. This involves a comprehensive risk management approach that combines strategies for reducing climate and disaster risks. A particular focus is placed on the interrelationships between climate change, disasters, fragility, conflict, and violence. The aim is to address these challenges early and holistically.

To support this work, GIZ is offering an internship in the “Disaster Risk Management” area of the sector project – either in Berlin or Bonn. Please indicate in your cover letter (max. one page) when you are available and which location (Berlin or Bonn) you prefer.

Your tasks

As part of the internship, the Disaster Risk Management Intern at GIZ will have the following tasks:

Providing content-related and organizational support to the team in the varied daily business and in longer-term processes in the field of disaster risk management, as well as at thematic interfaces.
Project-specific research, evaluation of documents, and content-based preparation of information in selected subject areas.
Support in the preparation of written contributions and speeches 
Support with statements and comments 
Contributing to the creation of presentations and publications 
Support in the preparation and execution of events as well as internal and external communication activities
Support for knowledge management

Your profile

Studies in political science, social sciences, geography, development studies or a comparable discipline, ideally with a focus on disaster risk management and/or climate change as well as related topics.
Knowledge and initial experience in international cooperation related to climate and/or disaster risk management as well as crisis management
Analytical thinking skills and organizational talent, as well as high flexibility and teamwork skills.
Willingness and ability to quickly familiarize oneself with new topics and to present them in an understandable (written) manner.
Flexibility in handling short-term work orders and the ability to deliver high-quality work results even under tight deadlines.
Excellent written and spoken German and English skills; knowledge of another language is an advantage. 
Excellent knowledge of common MS Office applications 
Prior practical experience in governmental or international organizations is advantageous.

Notes

The GIZ internship is only possible if you are currently enrolled at a university, are participating in a further education program that includes an internship as an integral part of your studies, or if your degree was awarded no more than 6 months prior to the start of the GIZ internship.

The monthly intern salary is €2,349 (gross).
