Exciting Opportunity for early career researchers seeking research funding: Join the HSRC Early Career Researcher Training
The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) is excited to invite early career researchers to this workshop that will support those applying for Wellcome Trust funding
Winning at Wellcome: Preparing to apply for Wellcome Trust funding for early career humanities and social sciences researchers. The virtual workshop will be held on 16 September 2025 from 09:00 – 13:00
HSRC Early Career Researcher Training
The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), with partners University of Cape Town (UCT), Stellenbosch University, University of Kwazulu Natal (UKZN) and the Organisation for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA) invite you to participate in a virtual capacity development workshop, 16-17 September 2025.
Applying for research funding can be a daunting and onerous task, even more so when you are applying to a premier and competitive global health funder like the Wellcome Trust, where the barriers to entry seem insurmountable. Preparing these grant applications requires fresh ideas, boldness, time, mentorship and administrative support. It is a huge effort but securing an Early Career Award from the Wellcome Trust as an early career researcher sets you up to grow your research, develop your career, and cement yourself as an expert in your field.
This 2-day virtual workshop is for anyone who has considered applying for Wellcome Trust funding. While the workshop will focus specifically on Humanities and Social Sciences applicants, anyone from any discipline is welcome. The workshop will combine practical and technical advice to walk you through exactly what it takes to boldly succeed at Wellcome. You will hear from people who have been awarded funding from the Wellcome Trust. You will also hear from committee members responsible for interviewing shortlisted applicants and from Wellcome Trust staff about new opportunities available at Wellcome, especially for Low-and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) applicants.
Workshop Outline
The workshop will contain 6 modules.
- Growing good ideas – is anything novel anymore?
- Rallying institutional support – who and where to ask for help
- Developing a transdisciplinary network of national and international stakeholders/collaborators
- Writing a winning application: perspectives from those who triumphed
- An interview to remember: being clear, concise and unforgettable in your interview
- Doing the work – planning for impact and influence
