Exciting Opportunity: Become a Mentor for the UNICEF UNV Youth on the Move Programme 2025
Are you ready to inspire the next generation of exceptional Young people on the Move?
Calling All Youth Leaders and Change-Makers to apply as a mentor for the UNICEF UNV Youth on the Move Programme, an extraordinary initiative in partnership with UNICEF, UN Volunteers (UNV), and supported by the Migration Youth and Children Platform (MYCP). This program offers you a unique opportunity to empower individuals from displacement backgrounds while also enhancing your own personal and professional growth.
Overview
The UNICEF UNV Youth on the Move Programme gives opportunities to talented and passionate refugees, asylum seekers, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and migrants to work with UNICEF through a 12-month paid UN Volunteer assignment. This initiative aims to create a more inclusive environment at UNICEF for talented and passionate youth on the move who due to their migration or displacement, face barriers to access UNICEF and other organizations’ internships and entry-level positions.
The UNICEF UNV Youth on the Move Programme builds on the success of the Youth on the Move Fellowship Pilot Programme, which was implemented by UNICEF in partnership with the Migration Youth and Children Platform. Under this pilot, 23 young people from refugee and displaced backgrounds from different nationalities worked with UNICEF country offices and teams worldwide between October 2022 and June 2024.
Why Become a Mentor for the UNICEF UNV Youth on the Move Programme? As a mentor, you will:
- Support mentees in overcoming challenges and achieving their goals.
- Share your knowledge, build meaningful connections, and make a lasting impact.
- Dedicate just 6 hours per month and gain valuable insights along the way.
- Receive a certificate from MYCP and UNICEF, plus other benefits.
Timeline and Responsibilities
Your duty as a peer mentor is an important one, and you will learn a significant amount about both yourself and develop personally and professionally through this experience. Though the Programme is 12 months long UN Volunteer assignment, mentors will be assigned to a UNV for 3 to 6 months and, after this period, will be assigned to a new UNV (Mentee) until the completion of the 9-month commitment.
The most structured part of the mentorship program will be broken down into 5 areas:
- Providing support. This can range from advice about approaching a professional problem (e.g. how to approach a task at work, or talking about their development), or be of a more sensitive nature.
- Helping them establish their goals and objectives for the programme, and figure out some steps to get there.
- Working on goals together: you can share with them any goals you’d like to work on during / across the mentorship period too, and share ideas on how they can help achieve theirs.
- Helping to build connections and professional relationships: working with them on how to contact and build working relationships / professional contacts is so crucial to a career but can be strange and daunting! If you think of anyone who would be useful for them to meet, it would be great if you could help make introductions- feel free to reach out to the team to help, too!
- Sharing knowledge, experiences, and learning together for their plans after the fellowship (enrolling at university, starting their own venture, working in a specific professional field, etc..)
Professional Requirements
- Be a youth professional and emerging leader between 20 and 35 years old.
- Experience and accomplishments in migration & displacement space, youth advocacy, entrepreneurship, working with international/multilateral organizations, or achievements in their academic journey.
