British Academy International Writing Workshop: The Social Implications of Extractive Industry Transitions in South Africa
British Academy Funded Writing Workshop for Early Career Researchers is open for applications!
The University of Johannesburg Centre for the Study of Race, Gender and Class, in collaboration with Leeds Beckett University, invites applications for a fully funded writing workshop aimed at strengthening the research and publication capacity of early-career researchers in South Africa.
South Africa’s extractive sector is undergoing profound transformation driven by global sustainability goals and national energy transitions. While economic, environmental, and technological aspects receive significant attention, the social dimensions — particularly gendered experiences, livelihood changes, and identity reconstruction in mining-affected communities — remain critically under-explored in high-impact international scholarship.
This workshop will bring together leading journal editors and early career researchers to address this gap through:
- Targeted mentoring and coaching on academic writing and publication strategies
- Direct engagement with editors from top international journals
- Opportunities for scholarly networking and long-term collaboration
The goal: To support participants in developing high-quality manuscripts ready for submission to recognised international journals.

Social Implications of Extractive Industry Transitions In South Africa
The British Academy International Writing workshop aims to strengthen the research and publication capacity of early career researchers (ECRs) in South Africa working on the social dimensions of extractive industry transitions, with particular emphasis on gender and identity.
South Africa’s extractive industry is undergoing significant transformation, shaped by global sustainability imperatives and national energy reforms. While these transitions are often analysed in terms of economic performance, environmental outcomes, and technological innovation, their social implications—particularly for mining-dependent communities—remain insufficiently explored. Issues such as gendered experiences, livelihoods, and identity reconstruction have received limited attention in high-impact international scholarship, resulting in important gaps in knowledge production.
This workshop seeks to address this gap by fostering mutual learning and collaboration between leading journal editors and ECRs working at the intersection of extractive industry transitions, gender, and social change.
Participants will benefit from:
Targeted mentoring and coaching on academic writing and publication strategies, Direct engagement with editors of leading journals in the field and Opportunities for network-building and scholarly collaboration The overall goal is to support participants in developing high-quality manuscripts suitable for submission to internationally recognised journals.
Eligibility:
Applications are invited from early career researchers who:
- Completed their PhD within the past five years, and
- Are currently based in academic or research institutions in South Africa, and
- Conduct research focused on the social dimensions of extractive industry transitions, including gender and identity-related issues
