Hosted by Emerging Climate Frontiers (ECF), African Climate Intervention Fellowship for Early-Career Researchers (ACIFER) is a flagship fellowship designed to strengthen African leadership in Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) research.

As climate risks intensify across the continent, Africa must not only participate in global climate intervention conversations; Africa must help shape them. ACIFER 2026 is building a new generation of researchers equipped to contribute evidence, policy insights, and region-specific perspectives to frontier climate discussions.

African Climate Intervention Fellowship (ACIFER) 2026 Overview

Bringing together 60 fellows from 45+ African countries in its last edition chosen from 400+ applicants, ACIFER combines mentorship, learning, and collaboration to build Africaโ€™s voice in global climate science.

This is a flagship program empowering Africaโ€™s next generation of climate researchers to shape global conversations on Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and Solar Radiation Modification (SRM). The fellowship combined expert mentorship, technical learning, and policy engagement to build a strong community of young climate leaders. Participants explored the science and ethics of climate interventions while developing solutions rooted in Africaโ€™s realities and global climate justice.

This fully-funded virtual fellowship will bring together early-career African researchers, Masterโ€™s students, PhD candidates, professionals, and innovators for:

  • Expert-led webinars on CDR & SRM
  • Climate modelling and impact assessment
  • Research proposal development
  • Policy brief collaboration
  • Structured mentorship and peer learning
  • Networking with African and global experts
  • Proposal pitching and publication opportunities

Selected fellows will join a growing continental network advancing African-led climate intervention research grounded in equity, justice, and scientific excellence. The fellowship starts on the 31st August and ends on the October 14th.

What Fellows Will Gain

By participating in ACIFER 2026, fellows will gain access to:

  • Expert-Led Learning Sessions:ย Participate in live webinars facilitated by leading African and global experts in climate intervention science, governance, modelling, ethics, and emerging research frontiers.
  • Structured Mentorship:ย Receive direct guidance from experienced mentors who will support your learning journey, research development, and proposal refinement throughout the fellowship.
  • Research Proposal Development:ย Develop and pitch an original research proposal addressing critical climate intervention questions relevant to Africa.ย 
  • Policy Brief Collaboration:ย Work collaboratively with peers to develop policy briefs directed at key institutions such as: National environmental agencies, Regional policy bodies, Research institutions & African Union climate governance platforms. Selected outputs will be refined and published as collaborative ACIFER-ECF policy outputs.
  • Publication Support Opportunity:ย During the fellowship, fellows may apply for the ACIFER Research Publication Support Call.ย Five (5) fellows will be selected to receive USD 1,000 each to support publication-oriented climate intervention research development.

    1. Attendance and active participation
    2. Assignment completion

    4. Alignment with ACIFERโ€™s thematic priorities
