About Emerging Climate Frontiers (ECF)

Emerging Climate Frontiers (ECF) is at the forefront of advancing African-led research, policy development, and capacity building on emerging climate technologies. As the climate crisis intensifies, Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technologies and nature-based solutions are increasingly recognized as essential components of comprehensive climate action strategies. However, African voices, contexts, and priorities remain underrepresented in global CDR discourse and implementation.

This Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) fellowship has been created to address this gap by leading ECF’s CDR program, ensuring that CDR research, applications, and governance frameworks are contextually relevant, scientifically rigorous, and aligned with African development priorities and environmental justice principles.

Position Description

The CDR Fellow will serve as the primary driver of ECF’s Carbon Dioxide Removal program. The Fellow will lead the hands-on implementation of research initiatives, capacity-building programs, and stakeholder engagement activities. Reporting to the Program Director, this role requires a unique combination of technical expertise in CDR methodologies, program management capabilities, and a deep commitment to centering African knowledge and perspectives in climate intervention discourse.

The CDR Fellow will play a pivotal role in leading and shaping African-led CDR research and policy, building technical capacity, and strengthening partnerships with stakeholders across the continent and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Knowledge Production

Lead and coordinate African-centered research on CDR potential, governance, and implementation pathways.
Commission or conduct studies, synthesize findings into policy briefs, reports, and publications.
Contribute to publications, op-eds, and other knowledge products for policy and practitioner audiences.
Develop research concept notes and proposals to support fundraising and program expansion.
Provide technical inputs into ECF’s strategic positioning on CDR.

Capacity Building and Fellowship Program Management

Design and manage the CDR stream of the African Climate Intervention Fellowship, including curriculum development, participant selection, mentorship, monitoring and evaluation, and alumni pathway creation.
Develop and deliver workshops, webinars, training modules, toolkits, and accessible learning resources adapted for African contexts.
Establish mentorship frameworks for fellows and alumni engagement plans.
Monitor and evaluate learning outcomes and program impact.

Stakeholder Engagement and Partnership Development

Build and maintain relationships with African CDR researchers, project developers, policymakers, and practitioners.
Organize regular convenings, roundtables, and collaborative dialogues.
Develop partnerships with research networks, carbon market bodies, technology developers, and funders.
Serve as primary technical contact for partnerships and monitor their effectiveness.

Strategic Leadership and Organizational Contribution

Contribute to ECF’s strategic planning, identify synergies across program areas, and provide technical inputs to cross-cutting initiatives (e.g., SRM, AI, policy).
Represent ECF at conferences, policy forums, and other high-level events.
Support fundraising efforts through proposal development and donor engagement.
Prepare internal briefing notes on emerging CDR developments and trends.

Qualification & Experience

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Climate Science, Agricultural Science, Forestry, or related field focused on climate change mitigation.

Experience:

3–5 years in carbon markets, climate mitigation projects, natural resource management, environmental research, or carbon accounting.

Technical Knowledge

Understanding of CDR methodologies (nature-based and technological).
Carbon accounting principles, GHG quantification, and MRV frameworks.
Familiarity with voluntary carbon markets.
Climate science fundamentals.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher.
Experience with African research institutions or civil society organizations.
Direct CDR project implementation or carbon market development experience.
Proficiency in additional African languages.
M&E experience for capacity building programs.
Publication record in relevant areas.
Network within African climate research and policy communities.

Working Conditions

This position may require occasional travel within Africa and internationally.
Some evening or weekend work may be required to accommodate different time zones and event schedules.
Comfort with virtual collaboration tools and remote work arrangements is required.
Access to reliable internet connectivity is essential.

Terms and Conditions

Contract duration: 1 year (renewable)
Working hours: 40 hours per week
Remuneration: USD 350 – 450 per month, depending on experience and qualifications
