Are you a young professional, researcher, or change-maker with ideas for strengthening democracy in Africa? The Innovation for Democracy Foundation has launched a Call for Projects for youth-led innovation, research and training that shapes democratic governance, civic participation and innovation across Africa.
Innovation at the Service of Reinventing Democracy in Africa
Innovation for Democracy Foundation is a pan-African non-profit based in South Africa. Through its network of laboratories across the continent and beyond, it promotes new thinking and innovative practices to strengthen democracy in Africa.
The Foundation will fund will support a number of flagship initiatives that address major democratic challenges in Africa. Projects should aim to:
- Generate original thinking and innovative practices.
- Develop new educational tools and digital solutions.
- Document, model, and share successful African democratic experiences.
- Build African expertise in the field of democracy.
Priority areas include:
- Civic education and citizen participation.
- Reinvention of law (customary, environmental, biodiversity)
- Local governance and decentralization
- Artistic and cultural expressions of democracy.
- Gender equality and women’s empowerment
- Digital democracy, online activism, and media innovation.
Each selected initiative will receive up to €15,000 financial support and educational support for 10 months. The funding complements, not replaces, project budgets

The Innovation for Democracy Foundation is a pan-African non-profit organisation headquartered in South Africa. It aims to energise democratic innovation in Africa by nurturing new thinking, training actors of change and building networks of youth and diaspora working on democratic projects.

- Are ready to learn, collaborate across borders, engage with youth networks and develop their skills in project development, research and implementation.
- Are based in Africa or connected to African diaspora networks, and can engage with regional/international opportunities.
- Seek to move beyond theory and into action—designing or implementing democratic innovation with real-world relevance.
