Call for Papers: 2026 Jobs and Development Conference in Hong Kong (Travel Grants for African Scholars available)

The Jobs and Development Conference 2026 invites policy-relevant research on labor and development economics, with a focus on solutions for low- and middle-income countries.

The conference invite papers on all areas of labor and development economics, with particular interest in:

  • AI, technology & structural transformation
  • Energy transition, resilience & labor markets
  • Labor market policies and institutions
  • Skills, education & lifelong learning
  • Demographic change, migration & youth employment
  • Inclusion, job quality & decent work
  • Fiscal policy, growth & jobs

The conference will be hosted by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Institute for Emerging Market Studies in Hong Kong, 9–10 October 2026

About the conference

The Jobs and Development Conference is a global event co-organized by the World Bank, UNU-WIDER, and the ILO, the Development Policy Research Unit at University of Cape Town (DPRU, South Africa), the Institute for Structural Research (IBS, Poland), and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Institute for Emerging Market Studies (HKUST IEMS, Hong Kong).

In 2026, the conference will be hosted by the IEMS, based at the HKUST in Hong Kong, China

Please submit full papers by Friday, March 20, 2026, using the online application form. Regrettably, extended abstracts cannot be considered.

Announcement: Travel Grants for African Scholars

To support the participation of African scholars at the #Jobs&Dev 2026 conference in Hong Kong, China travel grants to cover economy-class airfare and hotel accommodation costs have been made available for eligible African researchers with accepted papers. This is funded by financial means of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
