Call for applications: UNESCO Science Club Challenge 2026 African edition
Background
UNESCO, in partnership with BOE Technology Group Co. Ltd., is launching the Science Club Challenge 2026 to strengthen the long-term development and self-sustainability of science clubs worldwide. The initiative forms part of UNESCO’s global effort to establish a Network of Science Clubs, connecting young innovators and educators across regions through a phased series of launches.
In this context, the Organization is launching the Science Club Challenge 2026 African edition to support the growth and sustainability of African science clubs within the soon-to-be launched UNESCO Science Clubs Network as part of its global effort to build a worldwide network of young innovators and educators.
The African science clubs participating in the UNESCO Science Clubs Network will be announced in Namibia in December 2025, followed by the Asia-Pacific edition and the Arab edition, expected to be launched in China and Kuwait (TBD) respectively in early 2026. All regional efforts will culminate in the launch of the UNESCO Global Science Club Network in Paris in June 2026.
How to participate
All science clubs across Africa are encouraged to document the STEM activities and achievements implemented during the five months preceding the submission deadline of 30 April 2026. As part of the application process, science clubs are invited to prepare and submit the following materials:
- Submit a final project report demonstrating the STEM activities conducted, including data on beneficiaries and optional photos and videos.
- Submit STEM education resources or teaching modules developed by the club (optional).
- Prepare a roadmap outlining strategies for future development, self-sustainability, and potential expansion.
Before 30 April 2026, participating science clubs have a five-month period to conduct Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities and prepare below materials for submission:
Mandatory:
A final project report including a roadmap outlining your plans for future development
Optional:
Videos, pictures, and other evidence of the activities implemented, STEM education resources or teaching modules developed by your science club
Evaluation Criteria
All submissions will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Innovation (15%)
- Scientific Value (20%)
- Impact (20%)
- Inclusiveness (15%)
- Self-Sustainability (15%)
- Collaboration (15%)
Awarding
Outstanding projects will be recognised through an online, hybrid, or in-person award ceremony.
