Are you passionate about storytelling and the environment? PBS News’ Student Reporting Labs (SRL) is offering a unique fellowship for students (ages 18-25) to explore how young people are tackling the climate crisis.

SRL is looking for story pitches that spotlight Gen Z change-makers—scientists, artists, activists, entrepreneurs, and more—driving innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

Overview

PBS News Student Reporting Labs (SRL) is seeking talented college video journalists from underrepresented backgrounds to produce powerful stories about climate change and the environment during the spring 2025 semester. This Climate Reporting Fellowships opportunity is for undergraduate students with video journalism experience, enrolled in post-secondary education, including trade school, community college, or a 4-year college or university.

SRL is particularly interested in climate/environment stories about young people working on solutions

How are they responding in creative ways to the climate crisis and/or other environmental issues? Does their approach work? What are the limitations? What evidence do we have that what they’re doing is or isn’t effective? How can their work provide insight to other people?

Your pitch could be about scientists, artists, activists, entrepreneurs, or other young change-makers.

Benefits

Accepted students will each receive a $500 stipend, professional mentorship from SRL staff, and access to professional equipment to film and edit. SRL will also cover the costs of lodging and transportation, if travel is required for the story. Accepted students will be grouped into teams of 3-4 to produce a single story together.

Who can apply?

  • Students from underrepresented backgrounds
  • Enrolled in post-secondary education (trade school, community college, or university)
