Scholarships

Umeå University offers scholarships to talented and high-achieving students from outside the EU/EEA. Each year, a selection of top academic students studying an English-language degree programme at Umeå University is awarded a scholarship based upon academic merit.

Timeline for 2026

Please note that the dates are preliminary, and subject to change.

15 January: Deadline to have a Umeå University programme as priority 1 on University Admissions
2 February: Deadline to pay application fee on University Admissions
4–9 February: A personal invitation will be sent out via email to all eligible students
4 March (23:59 CET): Deadline to register interest for a scholarship
Late April: Scholarship results are announced via email.

Umeå University Scholarship for International Students

Umeå University offers scholarships each autumn semester, in conjunction with the autumn semester admission, to academically talented and high-achieving students. Scholarships are offered in the form of tuition-waivers. Selected candidates receive a full or partial waiver of the tuition fee.

Eligibility

Umeå University welcomes you to register interest in a scholarship if you:

are a citizen of a country outside of the EU/EEA and Switzerland;
have applied for a full programme at Umeå University (Bachelor’s or Master’s);
have completed your application for programme studies before the application deadline on 15 January 2026;
have paid the application fee by 2 February 2026*; and
have chosen a Umeå University programme as priority 1 on the University Admissions website by 15 January 2026 at the latest.

*Students exempt from the application fee who are required to pay tuition fees are also considered eligible for a scholarship.

Register Interest for a Umeå University scholarship

When the form to register interest opens, eligible students will receive an email with instructions. The email is sent to the email address you have provided through your account on University Admissions. Only applicants with a Umeå University programme as priority 1 on University Admissions, as of their application deadline, or second year master students at Umeå University (i.e. students who are currently in their first year of their Master’s studies) are eligible to register interest for a scholarship.

As a new student, your invitation to register interest for a scholarship is connected to your priority 1 programme. If you do not receive a place on your first-hand choice, but are admitted to another programme at Umeå University, it is not possible to register interest for a scholarship for the other programme instead.

If you are an eligible student and have not received an email regarding scholarships to the email registered on University Admissions by the opening date stated above, first check your spam folder. If you still cannot find your email, contact the university at [email protected].

Current students at Umeå University are eligible to register interest for a scholarship, given that you meet the following criteria:

you have paid the tuition fee for the Spring semester 2026; and
you are a registered student on the Spring semester 2026.

Current students who are on study leave are not considered eligible for a scholarship.

Eligible students will receive the invitation to register interest for a scholarship according to the timeline listed above.

Selection process for a Umeå University scholarship

After the deadline to register interest for a scholarship has passed, a committee within each respective faculty is tasked with selecting candidates for scholarships. The selections are based on the applicant’s academic merit, as well as any other relevant information shared in the registration form.

All students will be contacted regarding the result of their interest registration by the announcement date listed above.
