Call for Applications: 2027/27 Master Mind Scholarships for master’s programmes in Flanders and Brussels to outstanding students from around the world

The Flemish Ministry of Education and Training awards scholarships for master’s programmes in Flanders and Brussels to outstanding students from around the world. A Master Mind Scholarship includes a grant of €10.225 and a tuition fee waiver per academic year.

Eligibility

All nationalities can apply, with the exception of Russian nationals.

Student mobility to partner institutions outside Flanders and Brussels during the master’s programme is allowed (such as Erasmus+). However, at least half of the study credits of the master’s programme must be obtained at the Flemish host institution.

Students cannot apply for the Master Mind Scholarship for the following programmes:

  • Preparatory programmes
  • Bridging programmes
  • Distance learning

Programme requirement

The student applies to take up a master’s degree programme at a Flemish higher education institution. This master’s degree may consist of one or two academic years, but must meet the threshold of 60 ECTS per academic year.

Academic requirement

The applicant should have a high standard of academic performance and/or potential as proven by a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 out of 4.0. The GPA will be calculated on the last obtained bachelor’s or master’s degree. The tool used for the calculation of the GPA is Scholaro. Click on the link below to calculate your GPA (see manual 1 How to calculate your American GPA).

English language requirements

These language requirements are for students who will enroll at a university or a university of sciences.

The student has a good knowledge of the English language and can provide proof thereof that is no older than 3 years at the time of application processing by the higher education institution.

The following are accepted:

  • An overall minimum band score of 7.0 on the IELTS test or the IELTS Indicator;
  • A minimum total score of 94 on a TOEFL test or TOEFL iBT;
  • A C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference;
  • A similar result in another official language test (recognized by the host institution).

Additional information

The duration of the scholarship is one academic year for a master’s programme of 60 ECTS or two academic years for a master’s programme of 120 ECTS.

The host institution can ask the applicant for a tuition fee that equals the lowest rate of the yearly tuition fee for a local student who receives a study grant from the Flemish government. The rate for the academic year 2026-2027 is €136,50. This rate may increase slightly on a yearly basis.

There are a number of scholarships reserved for students from priorty countries for the Flemish government: Japan (3), Mexico (3), Palestine (2) and USA (5). If a selected student from one of these countries cancels or declines the scholarship, the opportunity will first be offered to the next highest-ranking applicant from the same country before moving on to the general ranked list of candidates as decided by the Selection Committee. If the available amount of reserved scholarships is not fulfilled, they will be awarded according to the general ranked list of candidates as decided by the Selection Committee.

Students cannot combine the Master Mind scholarship with:

  • another scholarship from the Flemish Government;
  • an Erasmus+ or Erasmus Mundus scholarship;
  • a BAEF scholarship;
  • a Fullbright scholarship.

Each Flemish higher education institution can submit a maximum of 20 applications.

If a scholarship is cancelled or declined by the selected candidate, it is awarded to the next highest ranked candidate by the Flemish Selection Committee. If a student loses their scholarship, the student will have to pay the full tuition fee if they want to continue the programme without the scholarship.
