About the Online Course on Water Pollution Management
Water pollution remains a major global threat, posing major risks on human health and threatening ecosystems with potentially irreversible damage. Since about 80% of marine pollution originates on land, it is important to address the links between land-based activities, water pollution, and marine pollution from source to sea.
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all and sets out 8 targets to achieve this. The progress of Target 6.3 – the treatment and reuse of wastewater and ambient water quality – is monitored through indicators 6.3.1 and 6.3.2. Although monitoring parameters and methodologies have already been developed, capacity development is needed to involve communities and stakeholders in the monitoring process.
In partnership with Cap-Net UNDP, UN Environment Programme, UN-Habitat, Cap-Net Lanka and Nile IWRM-Net, UNEP-DHI has developed an online course on Water Pollution Management in Achieving SDG Target 6.3. The 2024 edition of the course, with a new module on plastic pollution in freshwater environments, has been launched through the Cap-Net UNDP’s Virtual Campus.
Course Structure
As part of the training, participants will deepen their understanding of target 6.3 of SDG 6 and gain the knowledge they need to implement it. Approaching water pollution from a management perspective, the course highlights some of the key water pollution issues, pollution prevention and control measures, Integrated Water Resources Management principles that can help mitigate pollution’s impact on human health and the environment, and policy instruments that enable coordinated action.
Upon completion of all five modules and active contribution to discussion forums, participants will receive a certificate issued by the course organizers. The modules are as follows:
Module 1: Scope, drivers, impacts, and pollution management to meet the SDGs
Module 2: Ecosystems, guidelines and standards for water quality
Module 3: Pollution management as part of IWRM
Module 4: Enabling environment, institutional arrangements and financing for water pollution management
Module 5: Introduction to plastic pollution in freshwater environments
The training is open to various stakeholders across the water sector around the world: from river basin organizations and water management professionals to policy makers, international organizations, and civil society at large. No previous knowledge of water pollution management is required.
The course will be open until November 15, 2024.
