International Joint Master Programme in Groundwater and Global Change – Impacts and Adaptation (GroundwatCh).

The next edition of the GroundwatCh programme will start in September 2026. 1st October 2025 application for admission and Erasmus Mundus scholarship will open.

The Joint Master Programme in Groundwater and Global Change – Impacts and Adaptation has the following admission requirements:

  • Proof that the applicant has successfully accomplished*) a first degree of higher education equivalent to a B.Sc. degree equivalent to 180 credit points according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)
  • A good final mark as shown by a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least B/B+ (US System) or a classification of at least 2nd upper (UK system)
  • A bachelor degree or comparable in one of the following subjects: geologic, hydraulic, civil, environmental or agricultural engineering, geosciences, environmental sciences, climate sciences, geography, geology, or any other similar subject.​
  • Sufficient academic knowledge of mathematics
  • Evidence of qualification in one of the internationally-recognised English language tests. More information on the English language requirements can be found here. If you are applying for and Erasmus Mundus scholarship and you do not have your English test results available before 5 January 2026, you still have the possibility to upload them before 1 February 2026 at the latest. Your application will then still be considered for a scholarship.

​Applications may already be submitted before the first degree of higher education (usually B.Sc.) has been successfully finished, if at least 120 ECTS of the programme have been successfully completed. If the applicant meets all of the other admission requirements, admission can be granted on the condition that the first degree of higher education must be successfully finished no later than August 15 of the year the program starts. If you are in this situation, please upload with your online application, a statement of your university, in which it is mentioned when you are expected to graduate. Also upload your academic transcript with results obtained until the moment of application.

How to apply

Required documents:

  • ​Certified copy (ies) of academic diploma(s), if applicable in the original language and  translated in English by a sworn translator;
  • Certified academic transcript(s)/mark sheets, if applicable in the original language and translated in English by a sworn translator; including grades obtained and showing the average mark. Explanation on the grading system used, should be part of the transcript or should be attached to it. (Authenticated or certified copies are copies with an official stamp to verify that the copies are true copies of original documents. This official stamp may be from one of the following: a solicitor/notary, the educational institution from where the student gained the diplomas or the local council/local authority/local government office).
  • Curriculum Vitae including work experience and research record (if any);
  • While completing your application, you will be asked to answer five motivation questions. Your motivation is an important criterion for selecting you for admission and/or scholarship. Therefore, prepare you motivation questions well in advance. Please use your own words and avoid the use of AI tools such as Chat GPT. For it is not about how well structured your sentences are, but about getting to know you and your motivation, in particular for this specific programme. The university can easily detect writing with AI tools and will deduct points for obvious use.

    2. What are the specific challenges, issues or problems (in your country, region or worldwide) that you would like to address once you have completed this study? (max 1000 characters with spaces)
    3. How will this programme enable you to address above mentioned challenges, issues or problems? max 1000 characters (with spacing)
    4. What are your most relevant qualifications and experiences that make you a suitable candidate for this programme? (max 1000 characters with spacing)
    5. Where do you see yourself 5 years after you have graduated? (max 1000 characters with spaces)
  • Two letters of recommendation, not older than six months either by two university teachers or by one university teacher and by one employer, or by internationally recognized scientist(s). The contact details of the referee should be shown on the recommendation letter. The reference letters should:
    • Refer to academic and scientific qualifications and potential of the candidate with regard to the programme;
    • Refer to professional qualifications and/or potential of the candidate;
    • Refer to personal qualifications and/or potential of the candidate.
  • Results of an English language test proving you comply with the programme’s language requirements.
