Ph.D. in Sustainable Development

The University of Notre Dame’s Doctoral Program in Sustainable Development is a STEM-designated program preparing scholars to tackle critical global challenges. University of Notre Dame’s interdisciplinary approach combines world-class mentorship, engaged scholarship, and policy-relevant research to address pressing issues like:

Climate change mitigation and adaptation

Curriculum

Core Coursework (15 Credits): Five required courses taken in the first two years designed to establish a shared foundation and ensure interdisciplinary competency:
- Sustainable Development: Organizing the Field – Explore key frameworks and empirical evidence in sustainable development.
- Decisions and Behavior in Development – Investigate individual decision-making in the Global South.
- Sustainable Development Research Methods – Learn quantitative and qualitative approaches for impactful research.
- Seminar on Research for Impact – Enhance skills for policy-relevant research communication.
- Sustainable Development PhD Seminar – Prepare for qualifying exams and dissertation work.
Elective Courses (21 Credits): Choose seven electives, including at least three in advanced research methods, from across Notre Dame’s departments.
Dissertation Credits (30 credits): Focus exclusively on dissertation research starting in Year 3.

Milestones

While most students complete the program in five years, timelines can vary based on individual preparation, research progress, or other circumstances. Below is a typical structure for students following a five-year timeline:

Oral Qualifying Exam (End of Year 2): Demonstrate mastery of core concepts and specialty areas.
Candidacy Exam (Year 3): Present and defend your dissertation proposal to advance to candidacy (ABD status).
Dissertation Defense (Year 5): Defend your completed dissertation and share findings with your committee.

Teaching and Research Opportunities

Students serve as Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Research Assistants (RAs) throughout the program, contributing to their professional development.

Teaching Assistants may lead discussions, grade assignments, and assist with course delivery. Students must serve as a TA for at least two semesters (maximum five).
Research Assistants collaborate with faculty on cutting-edge research projects.
