Applications are now open for the Africa Institute’s Global Africa Translation Fellowship 2026 for applicants from across the Global South (grants of up to $5,000 awarded)

The Global Africa Translation Fellowship 2026 Open Call is now open for submissions.

Overview

As part of its African Languages and Translation Program, the Africa Institute invites applications for the Global Africa Translation Fellowship 2026.

The fellowship is open to applicants from across the Global South and provides a grant of up to $5,000 to support translations of works from the African continent and its diaspora into English or Arabic. Translations into other languages will also be considered.

This non-residential fellowship allows recipients to undertake their work outside The Africa Institute, Global Studies University (Sharjah, UAE). The fellowship aims to make significant texts in African and African Diaspora studies accessible to a wider global readership.

Funding will range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the scope and quality of the proposed project. Eligible projects may include retranslations of classic texts, previously untranslated works, poetry, prose, or collections of critical theory. Projects may be either works-in-progress or newly conceived works feasible for completion within the fellowship period.

Applications will be reviewed by The Africa Institute’s faculty and research fellows. Selection will be based on the quality of the proposal and the applicant’s demonstrated capacity to complete the project. Funding will be disbursed in two installments: the first at the outset of the project, and the second upon its completion. Recipients are required to submit a copy of the completed translation for archival purposes. The translation will not be published or used for any other purposes without the awardee’s consent.

Application Requirements

  • A two-page CV/résumé including institutional affiliation, educational qualifications (highest degree received), and key publications or works produced.
  • A two-page summary (single-spaced, font 12) describing:
    • the translation to be undertaken during the fellowship period,
    • the significance of the work,
    • justification for a re-translation, if applicable, and
    • proposed dates of completion (Projects may be works-in-progress or new projects feasible within the grant timeframe).

How To Apply

  • A 4–5-page sample (double-spaced, font 12) of the original text(s) alongside the translation.
  • An explanation of copyright status:
    • If the work is not in the public domain, include a copy of the copyright notice from the original text, and a letter from the copyright holder confirming that English-language rights are available.

Application Deadline: Thursday, March 12, 2026.
