Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
The University of Pretoria (UP) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation has been offering funding and wraparound support to high achieving young Africans pursuing undergraduate and post graduate (Honours and Masters) degrees since January 2014. The University and the Foundation entered into phase two agreement December 2023 to support more young people on the continent. In January 2024 a new phase 2 cohort commenced with their studies.
The target groups are young Scholars who are academically talented young people facing economic and social barriers inclusive of those living with disabilities and internally displaced persons/refugees that will contribute to the transformation of the continent through their knowledge, skills, attitudes and values evidenced by their leadership. Community service and internships are essential components of the Program including entrepreneurship. Upon the completion of their studies, graduates commit to give back in ways that enhance the economic growth and social development of their communities and the continent.
How To Apply
The 2026 Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is intended for students who have applied to and been accepted into one of the specified programs at the University of Pretoria.

2 Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences
3 Faculty of Humanities
4 Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment & Information Technology (EBIT)
5 Faculty of Law (Undergraduates: SADC, Post Graduates: All African Countries)
6 Faculty of Education
Eligibility Criteria
- Applications are open to Undergraduate, Honours and Masters students that have applied and have been accepted to the University of Pretoria.
- The 2026 Mastercard Foundation Scholars program is aimed at African youths facing significant socio-economic challenges, including refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and individuals with disabilities, seeking to pursue a higher education.
- Applicants must exhibit leadership qualities and a commitment to community service through involvement in projects, school activities, or religious organizations, demonstrating a dedication to making a difference.
- Scholars must demonstrate outstanding academic performance, maintaining a high academic average as a critical component of the Program’s expectations.
UP Application Process
Application deadline: 30 June 2025
Students who are interested in studies at the University of Pretoria and wish to apply for The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program must follow the application process.
Step 1
You must register to APPLY first to initiate the application process.
Step 2

Step 3
Post-submission, your application will undergo a review process. You will be notified of the outcome afterward. If you do not hear back from the University, please assume your application was not successful.
Step 4
Prior to admission into the Program, all eligible candidates will undergo an interview as part of the selection process.
