Job Purpose
Amnesty International is seeking a Regional Researcher – Europe to lead on the development and implementation of impactful research and advocacy strategies across key countries in the region, including Germany and France.
The Regional Researcher – Europe position is a critical role in Amnesty’s Europe Regional Office, designed to advance its understanding of and response to human rights challenges through rigorous, intersectional research and strategic engagement with key stakeholders.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced human rights professional to shape Amnesty’s work across a range of thematic priorities, including racial and gender justice, systemic discrimination, and the protection of civic space. Please note that while the role is based in London, it will require international travel.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead research and advocacy on human rights priorities in countries including Germany and France, and others as agreed with the Europe Regional Office Manager.
- Monitor and analyze developments across the region to produce timely, accurate, and independent assessments and recommendations.
- Design and carry out research missions, including fact-finding in crisis situations, and prepare relevant security assessments.
- Represent Amnesty in public and private forums including government bodies, intergovernmental organisations, civil society networks, and media.
- Produce and review high-quality research outputs such as reports, briefings, and communications tailored to a variety of audiences.
- Build and maintain effective networks with activists, professionals, government officials, and international organisations to inform research and campaign work.
- Contribute to internal strategy development and discussions related to research, policy, and organizational priorities.
- Support project coordination, work planning, and internal knowledge management processes across the team.
Skills and Experience
- Proven experience conducting rigorous human rights research, including field investigations and desk-based methods, with a strong intersectional lens.
- In-depth understanding of key human rights issues in Europe, particularly those related to racial and gender justice, freedom of expression, assembly, and rule of law.
- Sound political judgment and ability to develop advocacy strategies that influence change.
- Ability to produce high-quality written materials for varied audiences, including reports, briefings, and campaign content.
- Fluent written and verbal English is essential; working knowledge of French, German, or other relevant regional languages is highly desirable.
- Experience working with or in civil society organisations, international bodies, or governmental institutions.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in diverse, multidisciplinary teams.
- Commitment to Amnesty’s values and a demonstrated understanding of anti-racism, feminist leadership, and inclusive research practices.
